just asking opinions, I have a hard time walking due to both legs being badly broken a couple years ago so walking into a hunting spot to set up before daybreak would be quite a challenge in the dark. I wonder if afternoon until dusk might be ok, figuring I could see to get in the woods better and maybe the toms would be finished with some of the hens and maybe ready to look for some more, (my calling)
Around 1 pm , after all the hens have been bred, ol’ tom gets lonely. get in the woods at 11 AM and call more often than you would in the AM. They often come in silent at that time. Good luck!
thanks for the info. I’ve read that but tend to believe someone’s firsthand experience instead of a magazine story writer.
The best time to kill turkeys varies depending on weather and what the birds are doing that particular day. Sometimes they’ll fly out the tree and land on the gun barrel, sometimes that mid morning hunt is on fire, and I’ve killed a pile of them after 5pm. It all depends on the birds your hunting also, an aggravating field bird or a swamp turkey are 2 different animals.
the weather is important. in rain and high wind turkeys prefer more open areas so they can see their predators coming. Your as likely to call in a coyote as a turkey when you call. Coyotes love fresh turkey Shoot every coyote you see - each yote probably kills 10 turkeys a year!
Went yesterday afternoon to a place only accessible by boat where two guys told me they had seen over 40 turkeys while hog hunting last month. Stumbled through briers for an hour, set up and called sparingly, five hours later stumbled back through the briers, only fell down five or six times, fell in the river twice getting the boat in and out of shallow water, never heard a bird. Tough day but I figure I learned where I can’t go and I am more determined than ever not to give up.
