Aftershock 4/26 Report

So it’s about 11:30 Wednesday morning. I’m working diligently  at my desk, when it occurs to me that both the Edisto and Georgetown Meatfish slams are this weekend. Text a buddy of mine to see if he’s participating, and he replies, “yes”. I tell him good luck, and hope that the weather holds, to which he replies, “can you pre-fish tomorrow?”. Without really assessing my work schedule, logistics and the wife’s blessing, I accept, and then spend the rest of the day giddy with the thoughts of blue water and bloody decks, not to mention the sled on which it’s all gonna go down…

I leave Charlotte at 5:15 the next morning headed for Georgetown. Get into town around 8:30 and touch base with the Captain, only to learn he’s got a couple of things to take care of before we can get going. Run and grab some breakfast from Bojeezy, and then hit Walmart for some Ziploc bags and fillet knives in preparation for the slaughter to ensue.

Head to the marina, where I meet the crew. Captain arrives shortly thereafter, and we load up the boat, fuel-up and push off.

About forty-five minutes out, we encounter some technical difficulties. Captain jumps on the sat phone, rallies his logistics team, and gets the advice he needs to assess our issue. Again, we’re off.

Get where we’re going, deploy the Marsh Tacky Outriggers, and begin to troll cedar plugs. Water temperature and color look okay, and there’s a very loosely-forming weed line, but the fish aren’t where we are. We pick up and move a couple of times with the same result.

Captain then decides to run out to deeper water, where we’ll try for tiles. Find a good spot, make the drop, and nothing. We move, drop again, and nothing. We move to a few other spots, make the drop, and nothing. It’s getting late in the day, and we have nothing to show for our efforts. Down, but not out, Captain makes the call, and we decide to end the day trolling in hopes of some sunset action.

We get to the spot, deploy the cedar plugs and some ballyhoo with ilanders. Shortly after the
