Ok all of you who understand batteries better than me I need to hear your opinion on which battery to buy for my trolling motor, the AGM or the Gel. I have a 24volt trolling motor and will be buying 2 batteries and also need to know who has the best prices that you know of for the battery you recommend. The reason for going with the AGM or Gel batteries is that my trolling motor batteries are in the front of my console with 2 house batteries behind them making it virtually impossible to check the water in these batteries. I have a manual fill system, from Cabelas, for the trolling motor batteries but I am not completely satisfied with it.
AGM’s. They will take depletions and recharges more times than the other types, and they are totally maintenance free. The ones I have had are ridiculous in what they can do compared to traditional batts.
They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. You save a lot of headache and are usually going to get 5 years or more out of them without a hickup unless you really kill them repeatedly. They say AGM’s can sit with low charge for longer without the damage that happens to other types. My experience has been just that.
Sears Diehard Platinum Marine is the best for the money. Same battery as the Odysseys but with just a little less warranty. Still an outstanding warranty and far cheaper. You can use coupons online if you sign up for an email list you get 10 percent off. Then you can pick the batt up in store and exchange an old one to keep from paying shipping or core charge.
Marshall try Interstate Batteries warehouse on Leventis Road at 803 776-0489 for a blue top Optima AGM, D27M or D31M and see if they have any blems… I got 2.5 years of service from the first Lead-acid battery blem that I bought from them but I do add water occasionally. I kind of like paying half-price for a battery and I have purchased 3 from them…
I’ve spent about 85% of my life’s wages on fishing, the rest I just wasted…
I bought two of the maintenance free used batteries from the golf cart place in west cola for $30.00 each and they work great. They’re sealed and maintenance free and I’ve trolled from 6:30 to 2:30 without losing a bar on my battery indicator on my trolling motor. Same type battery as used on cell phone tower sites.
