airguns for squirrels?

last i was at a gun shop i got the random though after seeing high powered air guns on the racks. since .22 ammo is all but impossible to find but .177 and .22 pellets are readily available and cheap, anyone using 1000+ fps pellet guns for squirrel instead simply due to ammo availability?

I’ve got my son’s Gamo right now. It’s a break barrel single shot and with current fancy pellets is suppose to be 1150fps. It’s a little loud and grouping is not as consistant as I’d like. I’m bench shooting about a 2" group and 20 yards. No tack driver. I’ve been looking for the last few months and believe I want the style that uses a Nitrogen charged bladder. You don’t have the spring recoil noise.

Someone on here also posted a link to a .357 air rifle. :stuck_out_tongue: Now that is a bad rascal. Several videos on you tube. Very accurate, but… pricey.

I’ve got a gamo whisper .177 that I have used to dispatch a few squirrels, rabbits and racoons with. It will do the job but if you are going to get one I would not recomend the gamo ones I have the same lack of accuracy issue as Fred.

I have had two Gamo’s and they both sucked! Shot all over the place.

Have a Benjamin now and am happy with it.

Benjamin all the way- been sniping squirrels for many years now

I don’t think the inaccuracy is subject to just Gamos… I have a Remington .177 calliber with the nitro piston and for a while, I was thinking it was the pellets because I could blister 3 tree rats and then miss the 4th by a mile. seeing the comments about Gamo makes me wonder. On the other hand, a friend has a Gamo and his is accurate 100% of the time…

My father had an old .20 (what he called it) pellet rifle that he hunted squirrels with when he was a teenager. I shot it a number of times, pretty awesome pellet rifle. So yes, they definitely can take down a squirrel.

But why do that when you could use a crossbow? lol

def not in a rush to get one but kinda wondered if anyone took that route yet seeing as .22 pellets are under $10 for 500 and .22 LR is all but impossible to find. matt: dont worry i can shoot my bow in the new yard and have a couple judo points at the ready
