Airplanes and fly fishing equip?

So headed to Florida…need some warm sunshine.

1)My 10wt is a 4 piece. Can I carry on that tube?
2)What about flies? I am doubting I can carry them on anymore. they probably will say they are weapons with those super sharp 2/0 or 4/0 hooks!

I hate checking the important stuff even tho it is a direct flight so probably be no problem.

tubes- no prob. yes, you will run into chit with the flies. tubes to 45" long i believe. i have taped 4 tubes together successfully and it was right on through,

Ive been told (although it was closer to 9/11 that my tippet 6-12lb could be used as a stranglation device, i had to chuckle as i tossed it in with the lighters.

You can carry on rods, reels, and flies. I travel with mine a fair amount and I keep a copy of the TSA regs printed out in case they give me any grief. So far I’ve not had problems in the US. I’ll look up the link and put it in this thread. It specifically says you can have flies, and doesn’t limit the size hooks that are allowed.

Here is the information from TSA:

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/editorial_1188.shtm

Fishing Rods / Poles
Fishing Rods are permitted as carry-on and checked baggage. However, please check with your air carrier to confirm that it fits within their size limitations for carry-on items. Ultimately, it is the carrier’s decision as to whether or not it can be transported as carry-on baggage.

Spear Guns
Spear guns are prohibited from carry-on luggage. These items should be packed in checked luggage. Any sharp objects packed in checked luggage should be sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers and security screeners.

Tackle Equipment
Fishing equipment should be placed in your checked baggage. Some tackle equipment can be considered sharp and dangerous. Expensive reels or fragile tackle such as fly’s should be packed in your carry-on baggage.

You could always ship your fly box down there ahead of time if you are worried about it. I would not think the cost would be to expensive.

I flew to Florida in December - carried on a backpack with clothes, fly reel, flies, and a 4-piece rod tube. Never had anybody look twice at any of my luggage. Was paranoid about it leading up to the trip as well. You should be fine.

My last trip out West i carried on 2 rod tubes, flies reels, etc all in a back pack, no trouble.

Heading to PA in April I’ve always hesitated on packing a small travel rod & a box of flies, esp since you can’t have nail clippers! LOL. But I’ll give it a shot! just need to strip my vest down to bare essentials no more than 4lb tippet and no nippers. just need a way to travel with waders & boots along with clothes for the week all carry-on
