Nice ling! Where in Alaska were you? Just got back from Seward after a 9 day trip there. Awesome place and change of pace from fishing the usual here. Not to mention a nice break from the heat. Got a freezer full of halibut, lings, rockfish and silver salmon. Highlight/ lowlight was cranking up halibut from 460ft of water attached to a 3lb weight…
Was fishing out of Seward also. My goal was 100 pound of filets and that’s what FedEx delivered yesterday! I went with a friend from Summerville, SC and all the fish I caught over my 100 lbs I gave to him! I didn’t know until later that the catch was filmed! I only needed 14 pounds to fill my shipment when I hooked that Ling. You can hear me say that I didn’t know if I was going to give the fish to him! I took my 14 and gave him the rest! We even had a Pod of Killer Whales helping us fish. That’s another story:wink:
That’s awesome… We had lots of whales around no killers though. Word on the street there in Seward is there was a big shortage in ling cod and that filets were/are going for over a 100$ a lb. I really wanted a triple digit halibut…learning a lot more about how to make that happen…hopefully next year. Back to reality this weekend and see what the jetties have going on
Just returned Sunday from Alaska also. My flight was delayed in Ketchikan due to repeated and protracted weight calculations, due to high volume of fish checked as cargo. I was thinking- great, my plane crashes on take- off due to frozen salmon and halibut.
Fished a day with RAPCHIZZLE. A fun charleston get-together in SE Alaska.
@ $100 a pound I could have paid for the trip+. We had no trouble finding Ling! It was the big Halibut that were hiding. It’s getting to the end of the season up there and the Ling and Halibut are moving out to deeper water. Stickman, did Rap put you on the fish?
Fished out of Sitka two weeks ago, brought back 118lbs of fillets. Everyone should try to get up there and fish one time.
We hunted kings that morning and only found shakers/short kings. Sandy, I got a keeper at Bell just 2 minutes after putting my bait in the water today.
Easy, did the charter you were on have to abide by the 1 halibut per person under 44" OR over 76" regulations that we have to follow? It’s always a son of a gun when someone gets their butt whooped by a big halibut and catches the biggest fish of their life and I have to release it if it’s over 44"/40lbs. Had to let a 46" go today! It was just shy of being legal.
We were told we were allowed to keep one halibut over 29" and one under… Crazy reg…speculation is next year they are going to return the bag limit to 2 no size restriction but close certain days of the week to harvest.
Rap, they had to go by 1 under 29 inches and one over 29 inches! No size limit on the over 29. The hard part was trying to get your under 29 one. I asked 1 guide what was he doing putting us on all of these big fish! He said that’s the first time he’s had that complaint:smiley: I must have thrown back 10 fish because they were over 29, just to get 1 under! When is your season done Rap:question:
