Alaska in August

Well, the trip is on! Made my first reservation yesterday. I had been comparing car rentals, hotel rates and estimating meals to come up with a budget. Taylor was sick Sunday so I was home with her, instead of in church, and caught the last of Csonka’s Alaska show. Thought to myself, wonder where the Csonk stays when he goes. So I pulled up his website and started clicking tabs and wound up on his sponsor page. First sponsor was a rv rental…lightbulb goes off. Went to their website and found a special early booking deal for 50% off the regular rental rate if I booked by Sunday (they gave me another day to make my decision). In one swipe of my card, I solved the rental car, lodging and meals part of the trip with a 24’ cab over rv. Talk about flexibility…and saved $800 off the top of the whole trip. Planning the scenic stuff Jordan wants to see and then it’s on to the fishing part. Can anyone give a reference for a good all day fly-out trip for 2?

Roger, that sounds awesome! I may know a few people to ask, what area are you looking at?

I’m pretty sure ScottyD has done some time up there, also. Maybe shoot him a message.

Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.

I have talked to Scottyd and he is going to help me out with some stuff on the Kenai but I can’t find anyone who has done a fly-out trip. Planning on fishing from the Homer spit to Cantwell right now. Just today I got a call from a college buddy who lives in Glennallen (East of ANC and North of Valdez) but didn’t have time to talk since I was at a clients office. He did say I would hate NC trout fishing when I got back. I said I could live with that. Jordan wants to learn to fly fish so I’ve got to budget a new 4wt and 6wt, plus some waders and boots. Might be something that carries over when we get back.

Looks like your Fat Albert trip went well…

PM sent. You will love it! If it did not get so dark and cold in winter, I would have stayed.

Talkeetna (about a four hour rv drive north of anchorage) is the town that many of the expeditions to Denali originate from using small planes. They have a few planes at the airport ready to charter most of the time. Guide services are available in town. There is also a day trip river boat service that will take you up river and pick up at days end. I have caught many Dolly Vardens on that trip. I would recommend being able to defend yourself from bears. The Kings will be gone then, but silvers should be around.
