Albright Fly Rod & Reel Combos just in time for thd New Year!
Last month, I ran accross some Albright EXS & XX Fly Rod & GPX Reel combos that were used by a friend of mine north of the boarder as teaching & training aids. Most are 07 models with a few of the rods of the 06 variety. They are all in great shape as well as look and preform like new. I’ve set aside what I plan to keep for my personal use and plan to sale the remaining combos for 20% to 30% below MSRP with warrenty to recover my cost. There are several 3 piece models in the 8, 9 & 10 weight range with a few 11 & 12 weight models to round out the package. The price for each combo is $525.00 firm with limited quantities in each category. If your are seriously interested in a good deal on a great rod and reel package, you can shoot me an email so we can work out the specifics.
Thanks for in inquires, Albright use all top end stuff but have tried to price things at the mid level price points. Even though everything it’s made off shore, they use quality materials and craftsmanship in everything they do. I’ve fished thier stuff now for about 5 years as well as fished Reddington, prior to Jim selling the company a few year back. From what I’ve seen from this new line it’s every bit as good if not better than his origional Reddington stuff, with the XX Series being a lot more rod for the action and money! It’s a beast in the salt!
Thanks for the heads up, I can’t beleive that I’ve not had any hits on these combos from the Charleston folks. All of my outfits are all in great shape with most of the top end stuff having never been used. In my world anything in the $500.00 range for a top shelf rod and reel is a pretty good deal. Maybe it’s a regional thing, historically Albright has been really storng in the north east and the south west, maybe they don’t have the market share and presence that I thought they had down south!
To be honest I dont think they do around here but hey what do I know. Not to say they arent solid rods. I just might have to talk to ya soon about those heavier rods. Plan on getting out there and doing some different stuff this summer which would require a 10 or more. Thanks for the offer im sure ppl just arent in the market for one and at first 500.00 seems steep but when you add it all up and figure stuff out it isnt bad in my book. I think I spent around 300.00 for my first rod which was very cheap reel wasnt that great but it did come with line and backing. I must say it was a great starter rod and it caught fish but I would have rather started with something like this!
Thomas and Thomas 9wt horizon II that I payed a little over $700 for and a custom Tibor Everglades I got for about $730. Way over kill for around here, but I also fish the keys a couple times a year, so this rig works for me in both spots. I just bought a 6wt Thomas and Thomas for $500 and plan on buying a guideline reel from Just-reels.com this week for sea trout.

Like I said, it is overkill for around here, but I had the money at the time so I went for the best I could afford. I do not want anyone who reads this post and is thinking about getting into fly fishing to think you have to spend a lot of money on a rig. I know almost anyone on this board can probably show me up with a snoopy Zebco outfit (my first rig by the way). You certainly don’t need to spend much to enjoy and be successful at this sport. The only reason I spend what I do on my equipment is because I do this for relaxation and enjoyment. If the gear I bring does not work, it is not quite as enjoyable. Now if the mistake is mine I enjoy the learning experience. Also if you are chartering a guide in a far away place, your tackle that accompanies you on all the trips you make tends to pale in comparison to the amount you spend on a single trip when you account for travel, boarding, food, DRINK, charter fees, and money to keep the misses occupied, with the money spent on your rig does not seem quite as much. That said, my fiancé still thinks all fly rods are under 200 and the reels are always less than 100, so if ya’ll see her, please don’t clue her in otherwise, I will have some explaining to do.

I agree and why you’ll enjoy that purchase for the rest of your life, most of the fly fishing market like the average Jan or Joe that wants to get into the saltwater fisheries can spend a lot less and get close to the same quality that you can with many of the top end brands. That’s why I am such a big fan of the Albright stuff. I’ve fished Loomis, Winston, Sage as well as Reddington, Scott,T & T and TFO and I can’t tell much difference between any of these rods. To be honest, at the very top end you’ll notice a slight difference in the weight of the rods however if you judge the rod solely on performance with respect to how it looks, feels, balances, loads, throws and fights a big fish it’s pretty tuff to notice much difference between any of the above brands. As for the reels while the Albright’s stuff is not quite as tight or refinded as my Tibor or Ross line, their drags and basic components are every bit as good and they have held up just as well as my other reels under the stress and strain of some really big Bones, Stripers, Snook, Permit and Poons. They have even faired pretty well against some really big Kings, Jacks, Cobia, Dolphian and False Albacore for anywhere from a third to half the cost of the big boys. The other really positive aspect of these reels is that you can pick up a spare spool for under a $100.00 so you can have a couple of different set up options in your fly bag and ready to fish within minutes of hitting the water which saves you a ton of time and money as well as gives you a few more options when your on fish and need to tweak your presentaiton in a hurry. In my book, Jim has always desinged and manufactured some pretty innovative and quality equipment, he’s just not had the national recognition like a Loomis, Sage or Winston or had someone like Lefty promoting his line. I guess his Reddington line was pretty close before he sold it to Sage and started Albright with the buy out proceeds anyway, if you know anyone looking to trade up from a lower end model or would like to get into
Here’s a quick update on what’s left in the 06 & 07 Albright line and yes most of the remaining outfits that’s left have never been fished. Most of what’s left was either a display model or instructor rod. I’ve only got a few 3 Piece EXS Rods left so if anyone is interested you need to act soon because I don’t expect these things to last the week. As for their Beefier and Meatier 3 Piece XX Big Brothers, we’re in a little better shape however I’m getting ready to blow out all of my remaining 3 Piece outfits so if anyone is interested in picking up a good rod and reel combo that can handle the salt at a great price, give me a shout over the next few days and I’ll cut loose what ever is left for $475.00 a pop! Basically you’d have to spend two to three times that on a top end outfit to get something of comparable quality. Like the old TV commercial use to say, …try it… you’ll like it!
Yes we’ll break the remaining rod & reel combos up however all of our rods and reels when they are sold individually cost a bit more. As of today, any of our remaining combos have been marked down and will be blown out over the next couple of weeks for $475.00 to make room for our new 08 stuff. However if you need to pick up a guality saltwater Rod or Reel, any of our Albright GPX Reels are going for $225.00 with your choice of the EXS or XX Albright Rods going for $350.00 with the buyer picking up the shipping. Most of the remaining outfits that’s left have never been fished with most used as demos and for one on one instruction, a few were display models. If anyone wants to get hooked up, give me a shout!
