I went to the Old Pond today. Fished from 6:45 till 8:10. Solid fishing the whole time. I caught 5 Largemouth and 1 Red Ear Sunfish. Most were caught on a chart. and black popper.
I started the evening off pitching my mouse but had no looks, except the pesky little alligator that showed up. He was real interested in my fly. I switched to the clouser and he left (so I thought). I caught a little bass on the clouser. The fish hit the fly on the drop. No other looks on the clouser, so I switched to the popper.
Definitely missed a few on top. Caught a couple more smaller bass. Just as I was going to leave I threw the popper up near some overhanging trees and a nice largemouth, not huge but my biggest fish of the evening, came up and nailed the bug. Quickly fought him. I was just about to pull the fish from the water at the edge of the pond when Mr. Gator jumps out of the water and snatches my nice bass. Inches from my hand, scared the … out of me! I briefly tugged on the bass hoping to get it from the gator, but it wasn’t to be. The line eventually snapped and the gator got his dinner. My popper floated to the surface and I was able to get it back. I feel bad for the bass, but oh well - it’s still a super healthy pond. No sign of the carp this evening.
I also enjoy checking out the birds while I’m out fishing. Always some good ones to be found when I’m on the water. Just I was leaving a Barred Owl flew across the lake and perched itself above me in a big pine tree. Started hooting into the night, pretty nice.
Red Ear Sunfish - third species of sunny from this lake, I wonder if there are more.
