ok… so I will preface this with the fact that ive been drinking tonight…
I’m no writer… but I do read alot… This was structurally well written, and informative… but it kinda felt like I was reading a fishing trip report from a message board.
When you write an outdoor peice you have two options… you can go informative, or soulful… very rarely do these two cross paths. My favorite writers have been those who chose the “soulful” approach. But this is something that cannot under any circumstances be faked… it can only be genuine, and not everyone can pull it off. Read some Thomas Mcguane or if you wanna go old school Hemingway…
I write alot… the world is only subjected to a small portion of that, but usually I find that my writing is spurred by something. It can be a word, an idea, or just a phrase one of my buddies spits out… my head starts tuning and the next thing you know I’m spitting out a full essay… sometimes its crap, but sometimes its tollerable.
Why am I rambling along like this… just to say that there are plenty of people out there spitting out trip reports and “how to” articles… Look a little deeper brother and tell us what you see…
Or don’t… hell like I said, structurally it was well written and was enjoyable… But I think if you look below the surface you’ll see something that reaches further and touches more people than you could ever imagine…
Gotta say I’m with Mike on this one. I have kept a journal of literally every fishing outing I have had since picking up a fly rod decades ago, you would be hard pressed to find too much in depth info about patterns and weather, unless it provides for a better understanding of the adventure. Although sometimes it is a bit of a curse to be obligated to write a entry every time but when I go back and read from time to time and reflect on where I have been and how I have grown as an angler it is really worth it. Best part is I rarely make entries where I have not been marinatin in Naty’ light or some other equally impressive beverage. Way i see it I can find out about a the ins and outs of an area through study, flyshops, guides and trial and error. When I read I want to see the soul of the pursuit through another anglers glasses cause the fish are just a part of the game to me. Oh and Tom McGuane is pretty good stuff.
