Hey, just wondering if any of you guys know if Amber Jack are on the reefs this time of the year ? Looking to take my boy and his buddies out and would love to let them get a good fight . If they are over our reefs this time of the year what reef do you think hold plenty of them ? What would be best bait? Thanks for your time .
Your going to need to be 150’+ to be consistent with AJ’s this time of year. If you know of a wreck or heavy structure in 110-130’ they may be there depending on the water temp.
Ok thanks , don’t know if I want to go that far just for aj’s but thanks for your help. What will I get if I just take them to the near shore reefs this time of the year?
ive done a few charters to nearshore reefs (10ish miles from shore) and caught sheephead and about 3,453,045,789,305,783 of the rare, endangered, and elusive BSB. toss out a chunk of mullet and i remember one trip catching about 30 dogfish in 3 hours.
Bull reds are thick out there now as well as flounder.
Could go find Mary Lee!! Just a thought!!

Which nearshore reef do you guys think hold better sheep head r8 or towards the 60 . And thanks again for all your help. Also I have a philapino friend who wants me to bring him some of the ring tails are those legal to keep ?
Good luck on the sheeps the sea bass are so thick on the reefs you can’t get bait down to them caught Probly 300 sea bass to get our 2 sheeps
grab the gaff and another cold beer
A restaurant in down town Charleston had local amberjack and local beeliner heads on he menu. Beeliner sounds fine but not so sure about the AJ.

The sheeps are going to be anywhere inside of 100’ but nearshore is your best bet. If you want to get into the amberjack like courtland said 150’ but that is is where they are thick… 12 days ago the aj were not thick but some good schools in 90’ to 100’ plus lots of Almaco jacks throughout. I saw ringtails all over the place in 90’ plus loaded with drum and reds. Hit some spots and see how the bait is. Where you find the bait you will find lots of action.
Do you think somewhere near the Garden or out deeper ? Should i be looking at reefs or live bottom ? And you mentioned ring tails do you use those for bait for the jacks and reds as well ? Thanks for your info.
Tons of AJs on the 90+ ft. reefs now. Pulled on em today till we got tired. 4-6 oz. spoons and jigs over structure was all that was needed. Bottom was COVERED!
Gulf AJ’s are delish…I would think Atlantic would be the same when you get past the worms.
I’ve known folks that would willingly drink tequila and eat the worm, and then refuse to touch amberjack…
I’ll drink the tequilla and eat the worm too, but I’m not eating an AJ caught off our coast either[:0] Ugh!
But like Redstripe said, AJs in the GOM are clean and delicious. Never ever seen one with a worm. They are a really good eating fish.

Thanks guys we will not be eating them just want some friends to feel the fight. There’s nothing like an AJ fight from way down. Thanks for the help.
I usually try to quickly pass the rod to one of those friends
