Amberjack Fun

Woke up at 6:30 and loaded up the boat. We were on the water by 7:15 and started to make our way out of Bohicket creek into the North Edisto. We attempted to catch some menhaden but only caught a few perch and one croaker. We then made our way out 25 miles and anchored up on an artificial reef. As soon as we got there we noticed the massive school of AJs right under us! My friend immediately dropped his butterfly jig down and an AJ hit it right away, pulled him into the wreck and was gone. I put a perch on a circle hook but it wasn’t lively enough to get any takers so i switched to the croaker. I watched it swim down deep with the line slack and then immediately the line picked up and i was on! It made some great runs on my spinning gear but i hauled it in and we got a nice gaff shot on it. It had a 37 inch FL and weighed 23 pounds. We dropped our rigs to the bottom after that and my friend pulled up a 28 inch FL fish that weighed 10 pounds. The AJ bite slowed down and we caught a few remoras and Sharpnoses and then my friend’s father brought in a 19 pound AJ that was 37 in FL. We ended the day after my friend lost a 40+ pounder to the anchor line. We didn’t catch any bottom fish because we weren’t on top of the wreck.

This was my 23 pounder

This was everything we brought home

We also saved the planet on our way home:wink:

You mean the device in the lower left?

3rd picture’s probably the best eating…

Just messing with you looks like a fun day

Sounds like a fun day! Thanks for posting.

you guys are dumb, but this has been debated over and over again. there are tons of fish with parasites in them. i tried it for the first time last year and was pleasantly surprised. Worms are mostly in the tail section by design and you only need to waste a small portion of the fish. It is a marine tapeworm, that ultimately wants to be in a shark. the aj picked it up from eating another fish with it. The worms exist in the tail section, because the is the most likely place to get eaten first.

several of the bsb I kept were full of parasites last month.

The ones I have eaten are absolutely delicious. I prepared them and slipped em in with dolphin, etc. People were stunned when I told them what they had eaten.

I stopped at Joe Patti’s seafood market in Pensacola the other day and they have amberjack on the counter, including mid-section, shoulder and tail section fillets. The tail sections even had some visible worms.

We ate across the street at Sam’s and they had amberjack on the menu. Amberjack is not bad when fried.

On the otherhand, The Warden made a fish gumbo back in the winter and she used amberjack…that wasn’t very good - it was strong and fishy and we couldn’t eat it.

Or call me and I’ll come get them. Iced down not necessary. We use them as shark bait.
