The 597 is an ok rifle. Some seem to be better than others but thats how it is with most .22 rifles nowadays. If you’re looking for a .22 just find a good used Ruger 10/22. You will not regret it. I’ve owned loads of .22’s and there’s only two that I have that I love and one is my 10/22 and the other is actually an old Savage Springfield 87a. Not known to be very reliable but this one is and it will eat any ammo I put in it. The same with the 10/22. It shoots the cheap stuff just as well as the expensive.
.22 ammo is starting to come back down as people are letting go of the panic of the world coming to an end. Also ammo manufacturers are gearing up and expanding their facilities. Some are up and running now and others are close. I really believe before long it will be back to normal where you can pick up .22 whenever and wherever.
1200 fps maximum velocity with alloy pellets. Something around 1000 fps with lead. When siting in the scope, I started at about 20 yds and taped targets to a box stuffed with other boxes. With regular lead pellets, it went through 8 layers of heavy cardboard with no problem. So, I stuffed a piece of 1/4" plywood into the box and it still penetrated the entire stack. Knocks down a squirrel at 30 yds like it should.
With the things on rests, I can get about 3/4" groups at about 30 yards. Reading online reviews, 3/4" is not uncommon, but, some are worse. I think most of the variation comes from the pellets. Many of them have minor blems in the back edge.
Pros:
good small pest gun - usable velocity/inertia.
ammo is cheap.
ammo is easy to find - even when regular 22 ammo is very hard to find.
barrel/gun stays clean - no leaving from combustion.
about half the noise of a 22 short.
Cons:
about half the noise of a 22 short. (was surprised at the amount of ‘crack’ you get at the muzzle - didn’t expect an air rifle to make that much racket.)
a little weaker than a 22 short.
accuracy varies substantially with different styles/weights of pellets. Or, maybe behavior varies. I went from regular old lead pellets to round headed pellets and the gun went down and left (still don’t understand how/why). Tweaked the scope back in and all is good. I went back to the old style lead pellets and they went up and right. So, it has something to do with the shape/weight of the ammo.
single shot
trigger is genuine crap - this may be the one thing I do a little work on. Pull is heavy and a mile long. But, once I got used to it, I know where it i
