Moral of the story be careful when you’re alone on deck.

Thanks for posting. Everyone needs to read that epic story!

Thanks, FB.
Besides being a remarkable story of one man’s toughness and resourcefulness,
the article is full of insight on how rescue operations are conducted and good safety tips for boaters.

That is one lucky man! I was involved in 4 MOB cases in the USCG, 3 off Oregon Inlet and 1 in the Gulf. Not one turned out like this one. As for the one in the Gulf the shark didn’t leave, but we still found him…

Mister B- Would you care to comment on which you found?
The man or the shark?
Always like to hear details on rescues at sea.

I wasn’t sure if anyone wanted to hear the details on that one. Actually we found both. This guy was by himself on a shrimp trawler and fell overboard. He was right at 40 miles out of Freeport, Tx. When we arrived the boat was making a wide circle (obviously not on auto-pilot) and we spotted splashing in the circle. When we got up there it was the guy and about a 10-12’ Lemon…feasting. We grabbed the guy with the boat hooks and those 2 Seamen had a little tug-of-war with the shark. Had to open fire on it to scare it off. Got him onboard and my job was to wrap him in a blanket (no bodybags) and put him back in the stokes. There was not a whole lot left of him. Mostly upper body. Sorry, this may be TMI, but you asked.

Thanks for responding. I am sorry to hear that but hope the other three rescues had a better ending.

Not really…that’s why I was saying how lucky that guy is. I never saw any survivors, but some people do make it. It’s good to read a story like that though. Thanks for posting it. Lets people see there is always hope even in the worst case scenario.
