I haven’t been on this forum for a while. My quest to learn Little River has been a bit side-tracked by the arrival of my first child and future fishing partner Miss Sadie Ann. So, for the last 3 months I’ve made a little more than a handful of trips and then for only a couple hours at a time when I get a brief hall pass. That means the tide is rarely right (almost always near high for some (**() reason) and I’ve yet to have time to catch or buy bait.
So, I just throw and few artificials in the boat and go enjoy being on the water. Since I’ve not been able to get too serious anyway, I’ve taken the opportunity to try some different areas and techniques.
For instance, I’ve never used a spoon/trailer but managed to catch a 31" red in about 2’ of water over an oyster head one evening using a gold johnson silver minnow with a twist tail grub pegged to it. The red hit like a freight train and made my evening. I’ll be experimenting more with the spoon in the future.
I’ve also been slow dragging gulp shrimp on jig heads in creek mouths and can usually count on a flounder or two with this method.
Yesterday evening, again at full high tide, I decided to try a trout trick on a trouteye jig along a shell bank creek mouth that I’d never before fished. I was targeting trout but promptly caught two good flounder.
So while the lack of frequency has cut down on the total catch rate, by trying different areas and techniques 'm gaining some confidence in fishing artificials and realizing that there are so many more spots that might hold fish than I’ve ever realized.
