I am looking at adding more anchor line to my boat. I currently have 150ft and would like to go to 300ft. Is there a way I can join new line to the old or will I need to replace it all? Due to the size of my anchor box can I reduce the diameter? What I was provided by the dealer is 7/16 can I drop to 3/8?
A wise man once said “Do as I say not as I do” Good advice when I tell you that.
There are many ways to add to you length to your anchor line. Could you provide a little more info. Do you have a windless? What length is you boat? Where are you trying to anchor? What depth are you trying to anchor in?
Anchoring in 150’ of water with 300’ of rope is pretty tough except on the very calmest of days (and with a LOT of chain).
Just saying because I too have a 20’ boat with 300’ of 1/2" anchor line and have successfully anchored at the S.W. Banks. Get a 16lb Mighty Mite anchor and a minimum of 5/16" (3/8" preferred) chain that is 15’ minimum. This is the setup I was taught by a CF.com legend.

That is what I use as well (550’ 1/2" with 15’ 3/8 chain, MM16).
Make sure you buy a polyball to pull all that up!!

In OCMD I have anchored in the canyons many times. This requires 1200’ of line and I use 60’ of chain. I would go out and buy another 200’ of 7/16’ line. I would splice an eye at the end of you current anchor line and then eyes to both ends of the new line. Carry the new line in a big duffle bag that you can remove from the boat when not in use so it is out of the way. Get a large enough shackle to join the two ends. Zip tie the shackle closed. Attach at least 20’ of no less then 5/16" chain but 3/8" as mentioned would be preferred chain to your existing anchor line. The mighty mite anchor is awesome for wrecks you can also build you own out of rebar and a pipe if you are handy. This combo would give you almost 400ft and that should be plenty. Also get your self anchor lift buoy system and it will make your life much easier.
I recently read somewhere that a smaller diameter anchor line creates less drag in the water oftens holds better. You may be able to do the 3/8" with a good piece of chain. 300 ft of 3/8 would be managable. 300 ft of 1/2" is a big pile of line!!!
Keep in mind the smaller the diameter line the harder it is to grip with lots of weight from the chain and anchor, I also recommend the lift ball and ring system.

Opps, not a problem. I do this with 1200’ of line and the is 4 duffle bag on my 25’ boat. I would say with the 7/16" line as Jeff said pulling up the much thin rope would be hard on the hands even with an anchor lift system.
3/8ths line on a 20’ bote is fine. The working load is acceptable for anchoring. Go to Charleston rigging, or find a retired Boatswain and have them whip a thimble into the end of both sections. connect both 150’ pieces with a “D” ring. Use a polyball rig to float it. We use (3) 200’ sections of 3/8ths, triple strand nylon on Scotts bote with D rings between them.
