Anchor question

I’m outfitting my 16’ sit on top kayak for fishing this summer, and also have friends with 14’ and 12’ sit ins. we fish the river, but will also be checking out some saltwater creeks, etc. what kind of anchor would you recommend?

any suggestions you have for fishing gear, setups, etc. for the yaks are appreciated.

I would recommend a 5 Lb collapsible with about 2 feet of heavy chain. Additionally, I would rig it on a pulley system (Series of U guides along one side of the yak, and a length of rope through them and connected in a big loop with a d-ring), put the anchor rope through this D-ring, so you can slide the anchor forward or aftwards from the side of the yak. Makes recovery much easier, and allows you to position the anchor for conditions.

Hi cameron, long time no see. Tucker misses you.

I’m also interested to read responses to this. I’ve seen the kayaks fishing before, but I don’t understand how they gear up. My jonboat seems cluttered, I can’t imagine a kayak.

I guess you have a mount to hold the rod, a tacklebag-hippack kind of thing, and a few refreshments on board somewhere… I guess a stringer for the fish?

My other idea was that maybe these yakkers get out and fish in waders, so a 27 inch redfish doesn’t pull them through breach inlet to North Carolina on a 5 day 111 mile journey.

And that’s a memo.

That is what the anchor is for Fletch! Seriously, some use them to access the flats, I use mine to fish flats, creeks and open water.

You don’t have to wade the flats from them though, they are stealth craft for getting close to the red in the flats, and you can fish from them.

Some models have rod mounts built in, others you can add flush or rocket mounts as needed. Many also have internal storage.

Best thing about them, is you can put them in in place you cannot get a johnboat, and you get exercise in the process.

I love mine, and only go out on a “Stink” boat when heading out deep, or on some else’s dime!

Something I saw on another sight was kind of interesting. They took an old golf club and cut off the head. Then they would take the shaft and run it through one of the scuppers if they were fishing very shallow water.

Now, the golf club thing is interesting. Might try that. The collapsible anchor thing looks pretty complicated. We’re trying mushroom anchors next time out. If that doesn’t work, we’ll go with the collapsibles, probably.

Fletch, tell Tucker hello. Hope all is well with you two.

Anybody know where I can get a kayak trailer cheap?

Our kayak fishing outing in the Edisto River last weekend went very well. Caught a mess of redbreasts and saw one really big gator, two snakes (non-venomous) and lots of bird life. Life is good.
