I need an anchor recommendation for a 2005 20’ pathfinder. The anchor box is on the small side but most fluke style anchors should fit. Looking for recommendations on size/weight and brand.
Thanks
If you anchor a lot, I would recommend hanging a lewmar claw from your pulpit (if you have one). Fluke anchors work… but once you try a claw you wont want to go back.
Also, the anchor reviews online are unreliable.

I second the claw anchor. The danforth anchors work pretty well as long as you have ample chain to keep the stock down and the flukes buried.
X2 on the chain! Try putting a rubber mat in the bottom to keep down the rattle.
With a 20’ boat depends on the use, in or off shore and structure. Fluke anchors are easy to lose in heavy stuff. For that you need a reef anchor for sure. In sand fluke is ok, but you need long flukes which means a large danforth over 10 lbs imo. But as stated the chain length is m ost important. Of course the length of rope if you don’t have that covered already. So, two anchors are better than one final word…tight lines…

We have some home made reef anchors that we use on wrecks and reefs and a couple bricks tied together for throwing in the rocks at the jetties. I’m looking for something to hold in the sand at the jetties, away from the rocks or inshore.
I usually carry 2 on my 19’ boat. A 10 lb. Danforth for sand and a 6 kg Lewmar claw for everything else, both with chain, both rigged to trip and pull out backward if hung up.

Is the chain zipped on there for breakaway action to help pull out if it gets hung or just convenience, because I was reading about anchors/reef anchors and there was something about a breakaway line so the chain can pull it out from the opposite direction

Yes, exactly. The ties will break and you can pull it out backwards. In the old days we did it with crab line, but plastic zip ties are better.

Check out Sea Claw Anchors. I have one on my 21’ Maverick and a buddy has one on his 22’ Pathy. Great anchors, a little pricy so you don’t want it to be your primary if you fish the Grillage but they are awesome. Use about 4’ of chain and it’ll set every time.

I’m looking at sea claw now. What lb do you and your buddy with the 22’ have? I priced the 12lb.
