Anchor rope

I am going to try and anchor for the first time offshore. I can’t seem to find 300 feet of rope. I need to anchor in about 130 feet of water. So I was thinking of 300 of maybe 5/16 or something like that. Any tips on where to get good and economical anchor line that I would not cray about losing and is longer than 150 feet?

Long continuous line is pricey. I would splice 2 150s.

just connect 100’ sections with a bowline on each end.
won’t slip or come untied and makes it easy to count how much line you have out.
continuous rode is for windlass or anchor ball use.

You can buy it in 300’ and 600’ spools. I don’t know Charleston well but they must have a marine chandler in town with all of the port traffic. Southern Marine in Savannah carries it in longer lengths than that. You can also get it online from several places. These are 2 of my favorites…

Jamestown has it in up to 600’ spools

Hamilton Marine has it too

I like continuous length myself because I use an anchor ball sometimes. You can put markers every so often to keep up with how much line is out.

You can buy a 300’ spool of 1/2" on EBay for $69.00 including shipping.

Ordered my 300’ from wholesalemarine.com. Came with the end all braided together with a loop and everything. Not a bad deal for $135.

This is what I bought a few years ago. Has held up great!

Awesome thanks for the info.

Order yourself 2 600’ spool of bulk 3/8 three strand twisted nylon. Splice your own eye and thimble. The smaller diameter is compact and fits better on your boat. Offshore, the 3/8 for anchoring up to fish is fine, even for big boats, I’ve been on a 36’ boat using 3/8 for fishing with no issues.

As you can tell, I think it’s a waste of money to go up to the 1/2" line. You don’t need it. People will tell you that its better on your hands. Well, hopefully you will use an anchor ball so when retrieving your line/anchor offshore you’re not standing on the bow of the boat trying to haul an anchor from 130 ft down. Just hauling the line is much easier.

In 130’, you’d have about 450’ out. You wont need the 5:1 scope. 3:1-4:1 works fine. Do yourself a favor and sharpie mark ever 50’.
