Anchorage Alaska advice

Going this summer to Anchorage and was wondering if anyone here has done this trip before. Looking for advice of what to pursue and what’s not worth the time. Planning on a week of just fishing. Just the guys, no ladies on this trip. I know I’m looking at sockeye and king salmon, rainbows if there’s time. We’re also taking a halibut trip offshore; you can’t go all the way to Alaska and not catch halibut!

Anyways, any advice is appreciated. Flights and accommodations are already taken care of, I just need to plan the itinerary now. Other than the halibut trip, we are exclusively looking at fly fishing for as many species as possible. What should we not miss?

Where are you going out of for the Halibut? Seward or Homer? While in Anchorage, make a little trip to Chilkoot Charlie’s! http://www.yelp.com/biz/chilkoot-charlies-anchorage-3

Seward for the halibut. That’s all I know right now. Not chartering, I have a friend stationed there so hopefully getting in on good local knowledge.

I have a friend who guides up there, but not sure how close to Anchorage he is. He’s in the Wasilla / Skwentna area, fishes fly only, has several water craft he uses to take clients well up the rivers, a fishing cabin well away from the “tourists” and fishes a lot with 2 hand rods. He primarily uses “traditional” style flies that he ties. His tying & patterns are true beauties.

He’s an older fellow, transplanted from PA. He’s been up there about 12 years I think and guides for whatever is running up the rivers at the time.

I can put you in touch with him. He’s wealth of knowledge, and I’m sure he would give you some good advice even if you’re not looking for a guided trip.

I’m not sure about posting commercial links here, but would be glad to send the URL to his website to you.

I would appreciate his contact info. Not necessarily looking for a guide as I love the challenge of putting together the trip myself, but I’m certainly open to suggestions and talking to knowledgeable people in the area.

23, you need a guide! Trust me on that one. That’s a big place and your not just going to walk in off the road and fish. PM Rap. The reason I say that you don’t walk in, is you can’t! You may see a nice looking river or lake that looks within walking distance of the road! Only trouble is getting there. It is so thick up there you can’t bush whack your way through! If you follow a nice trail along the river or stream, you are on a bear trail ! These trails are the only way through and they are like tunnels through the brush! You can’t even get off the side of them! It is that thick! You need a 12 gage loaded with 00 buck at a minimum! Trust me and get a guide that knows the rivers and streams!

You’re very welcome! I hope it all works out for you. There is one request however. Please take & post lots of pictures from the trip!

Start doing some curls. Catching halibut in 350’ and deeper will wear you out!! Ling Cod are likely to be caught too and they are great eating.

I have gone fishing north of Vancouver several times in June and we normally do well trolling for salmon.

Bump, still looking for good Intel.
