I dont think 54 ft is enough, but i dont go out there much at all so i really dont know. I would get more rope and chain. I think i have 150ft line and at least 4 or 5 ft chain, which i think would probably be about what you would want. i have never let out 150 ft but at least i can.
I’d rather be a free man in my grave than living as a puppet or a slave.
We seem to have the same or similar boats
I honestly don’t know how long my anchor chain is exactly (it’s the anchor set up that came with the boat), but it’s probably 10-12ft. I know I have well over 100ft of rope as well. Depending on the tide and the specific spot, you could be in 30ft of water at the Jetties, I would say you definitely need more than 50ft of line to anchor consistently and have the anchor hold reliably.
I think 50 ft would be enough. The channel is deep at the jetties but you don’t want to anchor there. If you are anchoring somewhere near the rocks it is only 15 or 20 ft deep. I have gone out there with my 60 ft of line and have never had a problem. I may be wrong but it worked for me.
Assuming your talking about your primary anchor…
I have a 20FT cc with a Zuke 140.
150 ft of 1/2" twisted 3 strand.
5ft of heavy chain (go long or go heavy but you need the weight to align the anchor properly)
If I were to do it again I’d have 200+ft. On a full day of fishing I’ll use all 140ft of that line at some point. It’s nice to just let line out and not have to reset.
Can you get away with less? Yup. Do you increase your odds of the anchor letting go? Yup.
If your talking about a reef anchor you should be good.
Definitely you want heavy or long chain. If there are waves where you set up, and your chain/rode is not long enough, the waves will pull your anchor and frustrate you.
You can search this topic and read for a week. I use 100’-120’ of line and not enough chain. I have to add weight to my chain. I can assure you that you want plenty of scope when a big ship (or some sportfishers) come through. I have fished there MANY times in my 17’ Whaler. It is tough, touchy, but most of the time rewarding.
