Sorry this is not a local report, but thought my fellow FF’ers would apprecaite it. A few buddies and I went to North Andros (nichols town) last Wednesday through Sunday and booked a local guide and his son. North Andros is absolutley amazing…we were the only non locals there because most of the tourists head to the fishing camps. The accomdations were a bit subpar but for a 2 bedroom villa for $120 a night you can’t complain. The people were extremely friendly and you could leave your doors unlocked while you were gone…the beer and fresh lobster, conch and fish added about 10lbs to my belly.
The flats went on as far as the eye could see…
We ended up landing 30 to 35 bones and broke off or lost another 15 to 20. Most of the lost fish were due to breaking them off on purpose after having blacktip’s chase them down…or due to the barbless hooks we were using…they would just fall out of the bones mouth if you gave them any slack at all.
we stayed at a little place called the DayShell in nichols town. It had two villas and 4 individual rooms and we were the only ones staying there. The ladies that owened it even packed coolers to take on the boat for lunch and drinks.
We flew into Nassau then took Western Air to San Andros airport.
Hey Shevlin, was wondering what size fly rod and reel you used? I have been thinking about a trip for bones and plan on taking my 6 wt. winston and Garvin reel.
Do you have any thoughts on another trip, would you do anything differntly or go to another location?
Great photo’s, a great trip you will never forget

I spent 90% of my money on boats and drink. The rest I wasted.
An 8 wt. is probably the ideal size for bones. With a 6 wt, you will not be able to make the longer casts that bone fishing, more than most other gamefish, calls for. Also, you can almost count on windy conditions so going with undersized tackle makes it that much harder to make the long, accurate casts. I wouldn’t spend all that travel and guide money and then show up with my trout rod.

Thanks for the info palmettobug and if I go the winds will be the worst of the year, always does when I break out the fly sticks.
