What is is about Lake Murray that causes so many deaths?

Crowded. It’s not lake Murray as much as it is lack of LEO. We also basically have zero reason for people to follow the few rules that are in place. That place is a zoo.
i do not think that lake murray causes these deaths. my belief is that these accidents are caused by careless people and sometimes just a plain old mistake that happens. just saying
I think we have a lot more people in and around Charleston Harbor on an average busy weekend. We don’t have the kinds of accidents y’all have on Murray.

Did the dad just fall out the boat? It happened during daylight hours.

I fish both Murray and Chas inshore and the biggest difference I see is that most all traffic down there is moving on set paths, either up and down the ICW or creeks. With the relatively calm waters and wide open spaces, it’s not uncommon to boats traveling at 50-60+ MPH on the lake, even at night. To compare to road traffic, Chas inshore is more like cars driving down a highway and much of Murray is more like a bunch of cars cutting across a large empty field from different directions. It’s the Wild West out there on summer weekends.
With that said, most all of the accidents on Murray are preventable and normally wind up being attributed to alcohol or lack of common sense and/or rules of the water.
I just saw a post yesterday on FB by a local guide many of us know showing him being checked for safety and 6-pack by the Coast Guard, so maybe they will start showing a presence and enforcing laws along with DNR and county.
This is from last night, so sounds like the search is still continuing.

From what I heard on the news, it happened during the night/early morning hours & apparently he fell out of the boat. Someone found the boat with his 4 yr. old daughter still in it. Also heard he was a fireman. As of 7am this morning, they were still looking for him. No telling what might have happened.
Falling out of the boat is something I’ve thought about since I’ve gotten older. At almost 65, I really don’t know how long I could tread water or swim. That’s why I religiously wear an auto inflate PFD.

This is a tough one for me. I have to think that if this happened to me my 5 yo girl would jump in after unless some supernatural being was holding back in the boat. Reading the quote of the girl saying she thinks her Daddy is dead is heart wrenching.

Thinking about talking to that little girl is heartbreaking. I couldn’t imagine. Maybe heart attack was the cause? My grandfather in 1997 was on the river Florida, had a heart attack, fell out the boat and was found a while later floating 50 feet or so behind the boat. No water in his lungs. He lived his entire life as a commercial fisherman/business owner of many different businesses and knew not swimming wasn’t going to be the cause of death.

The news called him the child’s “stepfather.”
Either way, so tragic and avoidable.
God bless the “ignore” function.

Look, I get it… I don’t personally know him and I never claimed that he was a “bad” guy… It is a tragic situation under ANY circumstance … Heartbreaking for the little girl who had such a relationship with him that she referred to him as “daddy”…
Apologies if any offense was taken as none was intended…
I’ll pull my pervious comment out of respect for the situation…
The body was found some time after 10am this Sunday morning per WIS news.
