Never caught a Crevalle Jack before yesterday. He was about 13" fork length. Fought hard, but I had a feeling it wasnt a red, trout or flounder based on how it felt. But I gotta admit I was thinking BIG trout for a little bit This was a fun and cool surprise. It hit a pure white gulp jerk shad on 1/4 oz unpainted jig head
Also had a really great topwater strike by a 26.5" red. Tagged and released it.
Big schools of large jack’s used to cruise the channel around Castle Pinckney during this time of year back when I would put the boat in late in the day and cruise(drink beer)around with a couple of hammered spoons rigged up. Some of them would top 20#'s and rip your arms off.
We caught one in June about twice that size at the N. Edisto nearshore reef. First one I’ve ever caught too. Was a heck of a surprise when we were bottom fishing and catching small bsb.
I was just north of Murrell’s Inlet for vacation and would catch them every morning in the surf. They would be schooling on finger mullet early and late in the day. Great fighters and fun to catch on light tackle.
We used to go out between Drum and Daniel Island early in the morning and catch them on big topwater chuggers. It looked like someone throwing bricks in the water when they all started chasing and competing for the bait. The best part was hooking them, the worst part was the fight that would ensue that could easily take 45 minutes on a big one.
I saw what looked like a big school the other day up near yellow house in the cooper but alas they were in the restricted zone so you can’t stop and fish for them…
I hope it is a sign of them coming back too! Lots of memories catching them 30+lbs in the Harbor. My favorite time was right after a big thunderstorm late afternoon. The harbor would slick off and the storm ran all of the boats off the water. Great sport fish to catch.
I am with Andy, nothing like seeing 30-50 30lb fish all try to eat a top-water plug at the same time!!
Good for you,I bet the fight was fun on the light rod.Caught some every year about this time up the Cooper.Yellowhouse and Flagg creek. That area is loaded with Gar so sometimes it can be aggravating.
We caught this one last year while fishing for Cobia in the Broad River. At the time we were disappointed because we thought it was a Cobia, but looking back it was pretty cool and something that we will probably not experience again. It thrashed all kinds of gear when we brought it in the boat.
