claim, did you ever get your motor fixed? what was it?
We’re still trying to get it fixed and have been through several tries.
Back in April, as you remember, the Old and Busted started acting nasty on the WOT. It would run fine and drop rpms, run, drop, run, drop. Everyone said it was probably the VRO and that it needed to be disconnected. Not being sure how to disconnect the VRO, I contacted a mobile mechanic for help.
The mobile mechanic came to the boat and very easily pulled the oil line off the VRO and plugged the oil line and put a vacuum cap on the VRO and was told I’d be good to go. The test run proved otherwise - the boat still ran like crap and the oil light and horn kept coming on. A little searching on Youtube and I found a video that described how to disconnect the wires to the VRO - it was exceptionally easy - there were two sets of wires coming out of the VRO that ran to ‘easy-disconnect’ plugs. I can show anyone how to disconnect a VRO if they need me to, it’s that easy. Everyone says that the simple disconnect the oil from the VRO/fuel pump would not cause fuel problems going into the boat, that the fuel pump side of the VRO should be OK.
Another test run and the boat still ran like crap at high rpms. The boat would idle with no problems but at 4500+ rpms, the boat would wildly drop and pick up the rpms - it felt like someone was quickly accelerating and decelerating.
During all this, I kept calling my mechanic to come fix the boat. Everyday I kept getting missed appointments, different excuses for not showing up and put-off delays in scheduling appointments. I was getting pretty miffed.
I called my friend at a repair shop and he suggested ruling out a fuel line as an issue at the anti-siphon valve in the tank. He let me borrow an external gas tank to try to eliminate the anti-siphon guess as a potential problem. Another boat test on the external gas tank found the boat still had bad rpms - it apparently was not the anti-siphon valve - it was something else. But what?
My friend said he was backed up for weeks and s
I just got back from a test run - so far it’s perfect…scarey perfect.
Idle - never better.
Hole shot - didn’t miss or skip a rpm.
WOT - Hummed without a skip or a miss and got a boat best of 38mph in the ICW.
Key start: first try (but she had been river tested …gotta wait on a cold start to give this 2 thumbs up.)
I haven’t seen my bill yet, but they spent several trips and several hours on it, I know the prices of the harness and power pack … if the price is good, I’ll brag some more.
I’m hoping I can drop the nickname of Old and Busted for a while.
So in the mean time, if you want the mechanic’s name, PM me and I’ll give it up. I’ll post it later after a put a few more hours on the repair to make sure all is good.

Fished on Friday, boat gave no problems ( caught a tiny oyster toad )
Fished on Saturday, boat gave no problems ( caught a dink trout )
The boat is looking pretty spiffy…now, if only I can get the skunk off of me.

Ran the boat again Sunday and she ran perfect. She’s still a little slow to wake up (took almost a 1½ minutes) but once she started, she ran like a champ.
The mechanic was Mike Cauthen of Overboard Marine. 843-442-4509. Good guy if you need some work done.

Well…what can I say…the boat ran great for a few weeks and then got harder and harder to start - to almost impossible to get cranked.
I’ve taken the Old and Busted to Chris to see if he and his staff figure out what is going on.
Sigh. Maybe it’ll continue to rain every weekend for the next few weeks…![]()

I have a 175 Evinrude. If my overheat light and horn goes off and rpm’s suddenly drop to about 2000, it’s the overheat protection system doing what it is supposed to do. Then I (1) unscrew the “pee-hole” plug, and let the engine blow out water there for about 30 seconds, put it back together and aim the pee-stream where I want it to be, (2) then I take out the thermostats, using a sparkplug socket carefully to not ruin the threads on the thermostat plugs. Take out the ceramic thermostats and blow them out and use some leader material to poke into the screen holes and dislodge jammed mud, shell fragments, etc. Rinse and put all that back together and ease up to high rpms and you may have fixed the problem.
I am not saying you did not need a new power pack and wiring, no – it’s just that your symptoms exactly match what my 175 will do if I run thru mud, which I occasonally do, say like getting into Shem Creek at low tide.
Just my $.20 worth (inflation, man).
It might help you someday. good luck,
