Ok, so long story short, I’ve been in Chas for 4 years. Had my bote in the water 4 times, never w/o putting it in the shop afterward. I took it to Chas Marine last fall for some work, put in the water the next weekend, and it ran perfect (thanks Chris V). So after running it every other weekend in the yard over the winter, three weeks ago it wouldn’t run. It would start, sputter, and quit. So today I disconnected the fuel line from the moter and pumped the bulb into a clear bottle. It looks like orange juice. Opaque with pulp. I DO have a Raycor in place in front of the bulb???. So, i hooked it into a 5 gal tank of fresh gas with seafoam (1/2 can) and tried to run it today. As long as I choke it every few seconds, it will idle. I ran it this way for 10 min choking it the whole time to keep it running. So, I know the gas is BAD in the tank, but why won’t it run on fresh fuel, unless the carbs are shot. Or the filter on the tank is clogged. It looks like the fuel supplied to the choke line bypasses the in-line filter though. Did i just answer the question? And where do i go to get the fuel drained thats in the tank? I hate having a bote that i get stranded on every time (3 out of 4) i take it out. If i wasn’t so worried about it running, it would get more use, hence the 4 times in 4 yrs. Thanks in advance. Sorry about the rambling post, just frustrated to no end.

Having just had an issue with high speed jets on port mtr,(problem fixed, thanks Steve @ Island Outboards) I’m guessing junk in the carbs. What came out of the fuel tank ain’t right. Even with good filtration, little gremlins will find a corner,hide and then rear their ugly heads especially after sitting a while. Good luck.

Just a suggestion. My friend had been having problems for a while now similar to you. He found out that the cheap fuel line that was on the boat had eroded and was putting bits of plastic into the carbs and clogging them. Problem solved for a while once he replaced the fuel line. It started doin it again not too long ago and he first went to the fuel line and saw that the fuel line he replaced was falling apart on the inside again. He then replaced the line with premium grade hose and there has been no problems since. The inside of the old hoses looked almost like delamination from the interior and exterior walls of the hose. Just my .02 cent. May be worth a look.

Chuck- Mabye 30 gal left in tank. The stuff that came past the Raycor…well, shouldn’t have. I pumped the gas into a jelly jar and you cant see through it. Looks like rusty radiator fluid.
Broke- I checked the lines. I don’t really see where the’re corroding. After I get the tank pumped out, I will prob change out the fuel lines, along with the filters.
Last time I took it out it ran like a top (last fall). It was having an issue of stalling out at idle/neutral, which is why i took it to Chas Marine. When I got it back, I put 30 gal on top of the 20 that was in the tank. I then ran prob 20 out the last trip. I added Stabil knowing it was going to sit over winter. The tank is, I think, poly (grey plastic). The color/cloudiness if the fuel is more the question now. Has anyone seen this w/ their fuel? I sure hope this isn’t the tank somehow corroding or breaking down.

Water in your fuel. I had the same issue. I connected the bulb ahead of the filter mount and pumped into a clear gallon container. The fuel was orange. When I started getting a little clean fuel, it was green (mixed 2 -cycle oil). Let it settle a few seconds and it would give distinct orange and green layers. Kept pumping until I got clean green. Reconnected filter w/ new cartridge and sight bowl w/ drain. Full carb tear down and clean. Over the subsequent few hours of running, I had to drain a little water from sight bowl. For the 2 years since, kept the tank full,…no problems. Good luck.

how old was your Racor? I see a lot of people tend to drain their racors rather than replace them because they are not cheap(true racor filters), thats why I rarely install the filters with thE bowl and drain on the bottom, most people just drian them and never replace them till they get a problem. If you get enough water in the fuel system, it will go thru the “aqua blocker” element. If you have a true racor brand filter, use only racor brand elements, they are the best out there, but they aren’t cheap. If you have a regular merc/Yamaha/Sierra/ etc water separator, replace the elemnts regulary.regardless of which filter you have, write teh date you replaced it on the filter, with teh engine hours if you have that info, replace it often. Sounds like you got a load of bad gas last winter, or it absorbed enough moisture from the air to separate(do a search for phase separation). Pump the tank dry thru the sender hole if accesable, use a rigid piece of tubing so you can clean the tank in all the corners. Keep your tank as empty as posible, add enough fresh fuel before you go out to make the day, if you end up with an excess of fuel after the day of boating, it sounds like a good reason to go boating again next weekend
sounds like u need to have the tank cleaned, and the fuel system cleaned including the carbs.
