Another tach question...

My tach has always worked fine and it just quit a few weeks ago. I know my rectifier is good because I’m still charging batteries. My needle pegs 16 volts when running at higher than idle rpm’s. I even measured it with a meter. I ran a seperate ground to the tach just in case yjere was a weak ground since all gauges are jumpered together and got nothing. Ran the boat Sat. and the tach worked fine all day. Ran the boat Sun. and it didn’t work at all. I get good voltage off of the purple power lead going to the tach but I don’t know if there’s a way to measure anything on the gray sending wire. Is there a way to check a tach? Is it just simply a bad tach? Anytime I had any tach problems it has always been a bad rectifier and wasn’t charging batteries but this time it seems to be charging fine.

Being superstitious is bad luck.

I got a new tach sitting in a closet let me know the measurements and I’ll let you know if it will work. Just come get it.

No one knows if YOU are THE village IDIOT or not until YOU open your mouth and speak!!!

you checked with a meter, and its putting out more than 16 volts?

Just 16 but did not test at wide open throttle.

Shawn has the tach let me know what you find out.

Thanks man! I’ll catch up with him today.

i would not run the motor again until you replace the rectifier regulator
you should not be over 14 volts

What Chris said.
A bad rectifier regulator does not just undercharge, but can overcharge also. That is why the word regulator is in there. When the voltage shoots up, it actually dumps the excess off to ground I believe when it is working properly. You should not be putting out 16v.
