17’ Boston Whaler-Montauk

In your opinions, is a 60hp too small for it?

yes, 90 hp is about the smallest for that boat, will have a hard time getting on plane with anything less and have to run it WOT.

But perfect size to keep yankees from goin fast on the waters!

I had a Yam 90 hp 2S on my Montauk 17 and didn’t feel the least bit overpowered. With 3 people and gear, 60 hp may stuggle to get up on plane and run at high end of curve to keep speed up. Look at the 90 if you can.

Found a GREAT 60HP for cheap and don’t wanna pass on it

I ran the crap out of several 17’ Montauks while at college. I believe most had 50HP Johnson. They weren’t overly fast but did get up on plane with 2 or 3 “in shape” college kids. The one with a 70HP ran quite a bit better. All these were “stripped” models with nothin in them except a console and a seat. For a normally equipped model I wouldn’t go less that a 70HP. 90HP is ideal.

OK, then look for a BW 15.

Well, try it on the Montauk. Have fun. It’s only a boat. Worse you’ll do is sell 'em later.

I run a 115 2-stroke on my Montauk, but like to go fast. 60 hp is underpowered. Whalers are heavy - plan accordingly. Add a trolling motor with 2 extra batteries, a friend, etc. and you’re bogged down.

I’d pass on the 60 HP for this boat.

We have a 115 Evinrude on it right now, and even with only 3 cylinders running, it was wayyyy to much power. Our 17’ is stripped. Bench Seat, Cooler Seat, and Box for Steering wheel.

My old 17’ Whaler “SuperSport” runs an 88 hp Evinrude and it will top out at about 38mph with a bunch of gear in her and the heavy console and seating. I would think a 60 hp would be borderline for that boat. Probably would get you where your going OK and get up on plane fairly easily if you didn’t overload her with a lot of fuel, batteries and three 200# guy’s. I’ve always heard that the recommended hp for that boat was about 90hp.

I figured a 90 would be perfect. We only running a short distance in the wando, from the landing to my “hone holes”
