anti siphon valve?

i am having a fuel starvation issue and replace exterior fuel lines,filter/separator and primer bulb. the interior fuel lines look to be in good shape. the new bulb will get tight only some of the time so i am thinking its the asv. Also, alarm and check engine light come on at idle but when you accelerate alarm and check engine light go off. the engine sounds like fuel starvation when you crank it up and idle but runs fine w more rpms. the brass fitting has a little corrosion so i figure the asv must be corroded also. i think the asv is aluminum and wonder if electrolysis could have ruined the valve? i have not worked on engines or gas tanks before but i am good at fixing things. Any advice guys? anyone changed a anti siphon valve before?

ASVs have a bad habit of getting stuck closed or not opening fully due to debris. Personnally I do not like to have an ASV installed as it create restrition based on its design, and like I said it is prone to failure.

Get a 2 gallon tank and fill it with fresh fuel and hook up (with different lines) to outboard. If it runs okay you know that something upstream from your motor is the problem. If it does the same thing then you know it is something in the engine. Carb valves can get stuck too.

I had pretty much the same problem the summer before last. If I was at idle or displacement speed the engine would starve for fuel; on plane it ran great. The ball in the ASV appeared to move easily and freely but apparently it had just enough resistance that the engine couldn’t crack it at low RPMs. Replaced the ASV with a regular fuel fitting and have had no problems since.

I only got to this point after replacing everything from the ASV to the low pressure pump. I don’t even want to think about how much time and money I wasted on this problem.

what kind of motor

Chris is a yr 2000 Johnson ocean pro 200 hp. w carbs. Also, the alarm sound is a steady beep that last for about 15-25 secs maybe. thanks guys. for some reason i am convinced that this is my problem.

you need to check fuel vacuum at teh motor before you do anything
and the VRO is the most common and of course the most expensive failure point

Thanks Chris, I will for sure check the fuel vacuum. I have been thinking about disconnecting the vro as i have heard of many problems w them. It seems to be working as the engine uses oil and the low oil & low oil warning lights do not come on. could the vro make the Check engine alarm/light come on or would it just make the oil warning lights come on?

vro pump is also fuel pump
low fuel pressure will cause check engine light

thanks chris. i may just bring it up to CM and let yall check it out.
