Gang: I’m curious of your thoughts on this problem. Have a 2005, 115 HP Johnson. Has always run well. Lately, if I push it over 3/4 speed the water temp alarm comes on within 30 seconds. I then slow down, turn off engine, restart and all is fine. I can continue to run all day without a problem at anything below 3/4 speed on the throttle.
When the alarm goes off the engine is still peeing a good stream. Had the water pump replaced in April. And, for the record, I hardly ever push it WOT or even above 3/4 speed.
Any thoughts? Would love to hear them. Thanks.
Was only the impeller replaced, or the entire water pump assembly, And was it pressure tested?

Did it ever do this before the impeller was changed?
How did the impeller look when it was removed? Were there any large pieces missing from the impeller? If so, there may be pieces blocking a cooling passage.
Have you replaced the T-stat yet? It may be holding some sand or debris, but while you have it out, you might as well replace it because they aren’t that expensive.

Loosewire: It never did this before the impeller was changed and that was at least two full seasons of running. Not sure how the impeller looked when removed as I’ll have to ask the mechanic but that’s a good thought on the blocked passages/impeller piece. T-stat is certainly something I’m suspicious of…though I figured it would be going off a bit more if it was out of whack.
Mixednutz: I asked if it was pressure tested and was told it’s not standard to do that on the 2 stroke Johnsons…
Appreciate the responses, guys. Thanks.
Don’t just do something. Sit there!
