Any "Classic Boat" Lovers? (Pics/Short Story)

Hooray! (I think…) Just picked this ole beast up from someone on Craigslist. It was a steal that I couldn’t turn down. I don’t know if I should work on it and play with it, or just try to flip it for a profit. We’ll see. I’ve got to give it a better lookin’ over in the AM. I agreed to buy it “sight-unseen” so who knows what I’ll find tomorrow in some good light???

It’s a 1973 Grady White with an '89 Mercury. It cranked fine and has a new starter and new battery. It is a TOTAL “fix-er-upper”, but we’ll see what I decide to do. I don’t know if I wanna invest the time/money/patience into this thing when I have a seaworthy craft already.

Anyway, here she is:

Definitly a sweet older Grady there! Love the lapstrake lines on the older ones. Looks like all the major pieces are there. The hull is probabbly twice as thick as a brand new one!

My friend has the same boat (maybe a little newer, but the same hull). It is indeed a tank. It is a very nice riding boat, but is subject to pounding in the bigger stuff when going too fast.

Yep, Definitely a harbor/jetties craft only.

Now where did I put my Hair-Gel?!

No it is actually quite capable of fishing past the jetties. It is a very seaworthy boat; high freeboard, full transom, and no chance of that hull coming apart. You just have to slow down and slug it out if it gets nasty. My friend has his out 30+ miles off of New Jersey.

Then I want some of that NJ hair-tonic!

They don’t build’em like they used to, that’s for sure.

I think its pretty ■■■■ cool

What blasting media would be used in order to strip the boat of all it’s paint? The white section really doesn’t look too bad, but the blue needs some help REAL BAD! It’s mostly all flat, and between my orbital, belt, and palm sander, I’m pretty sure I can strip all that mess off.

Yeh man, I never met a boat I didn’t like. For some reason I just like the old ones more. Take your time and fix her up. Concentrate on things you can do without putting out alot of money. It’s amazing what a little elbow grease and spray paint can do. either way don’t sell it until spring. That’s when everyone has boat fever. Guys like us…we have boat fever all of the time!!!

I’ve gotten rusty on posting pics. I think this is good.

1967 Glastron Gulfstream V-204 I/O. Sold it about 6 years ago. Intake didn’t like salt water always flushed it but still put on two intakes, one gimble bearing, and an alternator. Never left me stranded and a tank of gas would take me from West Bank in Jacksonboro to California Dreaming and back cruising 25 @ 3800. It would pull two little skiers, but only one adult.

Just don’t beach it and let the tide go out, that was one heavy boat, don’t know what the draft was but it needed plenty of water. sides were a little high but very comfortable boat to drink a beer and hope for a cobia to come alone.
