Would any of you veteran Reds flyfishermen kindly share any of your favorite flats with an old Ranger? I have several that I have been fishing from my boat but don’t know any that can be accessed by foot. I don’t want to know your favorite 2 or 3 places; perhaps your 4th and 5th favorite ones. I live in West Ashley and I know I’m suppose to go out and find my own through trial and error but since I’m 137 years old, I just don’t have enough time left. If you don’t want half of Charleston in your spots but wouldn’t mind one old man, you can email me privately. Thanks… < theriverhouseantiques@comcast.net >
“Ranger, Lead The Way”… US Army Rangers '62-'72
I have the luxury of being able to push a canoe off of my family’s dock and wish I could offer it to you, but, it’s not my dock nor my canoe. The best I can do is to suggest places that I have seen and thought about trying. The causeways that lead to all of the barrier islands go through miles of marsh that is close to the ocean and deep creeks. I had occasion to drive out to Folly a month or so back and had the same thoughts all over again. The road shoulders are plenty wide at places to get away from the road. It would probably take a few trips to figure out which flats have the most activity and how best to approach them. Sometimes we waders have to take circuitous routes to avoid the tall grass/soft mud.
I would expect the approach to the Ben Sawyer would have some spots as would the approach to the IOP connector.
I’ve also noticed the flats beside the Ashley River bridge coming out of town (http://www.bing.com/maps/default.aspx?v=2&FORM=LMLTCP&cp=32.782814~-79.969504&style=h&lvl=17&tilt=-90&dir=0&alt=-1000&phx=0&phy=0&phscl=1&encType=1). That map looks great. Good deep creeks feeding those flats with a little marsh island near the river to give some firmer edges to walk/wade.
BTW, thanks for your service.
