Any point in doing this?

I developed a ticking noise on my 2000 yamaha 150 OX66 noted at idle and low rpm’s while in gear. Have run combustion chamber cleaner thru the air intake, cleaned the O2 sensor and pipe which had alot of carbon build-up, and lastly replaced the plugs. Ran the engine on the hose afterwards, but was difficult to tell whether it was improved due to the loud exhuast. Plan to water test it this weekend. I read that you can also place the combustion chamber cleaner where the plugs are located, let sit and then run as well, but haven’t done yet. Also, is there any reason to run the shock treatment of ring-free, in addition to the above (ie, does it reach other areas where there can be carbon build-up?) Hope this fixes it, could it also need adjustment in the timing (?retard timing to decrease predetonation). Hope its not a bad bearing!!! Thanks

May be just gear noise (clatter) in the lower gear housing. I seem to remember seeing some discussion regarding older Yamahas developing a ticking or rattle at low speeds while in gear. I don’t think it was anything to worry about. May want to check/change your gear oil if it hasn’t been done lately.

Thanks hairball. Gearcase oir recently changed and looked good, no milky color or large amount of metal shavings noted on the magnet. It has had this ticking noise for some time (noted last season as well), just seems a little more prominent now.

Noise should be gone if you cleaned O2 tube. Water test is in order. been there with exact same motor. read here

Fishing on the bottom is like having sex with the lights turned off. It feels good… but I wanna see it.

Thanks, Smily. I wasn’t able to clean it quite as well as in your pics. Got the inside of the tube cleaned out well, but couldn’t get the outer area between the two ends totally clean with the ring free and wire brush. Was a little nervous about using a file or metal scraper on it. Put it back together with the old gasket, had to order a new one that won’t be in for the test drive, but I guess it will be ok. Thanks for the link—very helpful

I would say 0-2 sensor tube

Thanks to Chris V and Smily. Cleaning the O2 sensor pipe took care of the engine tick!!
