Any suggestions?

Hey there everyone I am still fairly new to the area, yet I absolutely love to fish though I almost never keep anything. I have been to the beach areas as I have no boat and along the banks of the ashley river. So what I am tryin to figure out is what’s in the river and what’s good to use to catch it. As far as the beaches go I wouldn’t mind payin for the pier time at folly but is it possible to catch any cobia from there or even the inlet sides?

I know this same post has made it to a couple of forums and I apologize for that,
. I am still figuring out exactly where the right places to ask a question is.

Well, I hate to see new people post requests for help and no one help them, (but keep in mind that people are always thinking that a post like this might just be a bait thread), so, since no one else is offering you any help here, I’ll give you a little help. I don’t know what your skill level or experience is, so I’ll give you some simple basics that work well for beginners. Look on Google Earth, find you a couple of good places to river fish from the bank, and toss some cut mullet out on the bottom near some flooded grass or an oyster bank. If the cut mullet isn’t working at a given time, try mud minners, crab, or live shrimp. Do that, and you should catch some fish. Redfish are all over Chas. As it gets close to the end of the summer and early fall, try live shrimp. One place I know you can fish from the bank is the park at the old Navy Base. If you want to toss plastics, just get a green or silver grub and an 1/4 oz head and cast away. It’s a good staple artificial. Try to fish near oysters, draining flats and feeder creeks, bank indentions, and points where two creeks come together. That’s about as much detail as I can go into for a land-locked fisherman right now, as I really don’t know many places to fish from the bank. Hope this helps.

Bobby, good luck out there and welcome to the site. If I had some advice to offer about the Ashley, beyond enjoy the effort and the environment, I’d give it.

One area I enjoyed (but had limited success at) when I surf fish was behind Ft. Moultrie on S. Island. There’s the old pier pilings and a couple of breaks that have holes I could reach at low tide and catch tons of “endangered” sea bass and the occasional flounder. Even caught a really nice spade fish once.

One thing I always caught was a tan, peace of mind, and a fine cigar! Hope your trips are good ones! Friendly reminder, license are required for shore fishing now. wouldn’t want your “chill” to be spoiled by DNR! LOL! Best of luck!
