So we have tons of very large black sea urchin here off of our coast but I have never heard of anybody eating them. I know that the ones in California look very similar and I love the taste of their local uni. It just hurts to pay $20 for one or two very small tastes of the roe when there are thousands right at the jetties and offshore.
Thoughts?
Good thoughts! Safely harvesting them is the only thing holding up the experiment right?

No worse than lionfish… That is the understatement of the year. After being stung by one last year I will never ever mess with one again for the rest of my life. Most painful injury I have ever received on the water. Twice as bad as the stingray in 10 times worse than Portuguese man of war. Pain was so bad it made me nauseous

sorry, but I had to laugh a little!
I remember Dad getting stung by a Portuguese man of war, we were almost to the Emergency room and he declined… but he was in major pain. I can only imagine a Lionfish and You of all people talking about how bad they hurt!!! I just have to believe that it Hurt!!

I stand corrected. Either way, people do dive for them commercially in other places so it is doable.

Uni… outstanding. I’ve eaten them several times when they were available and my speargun was not useful. Excellent fresh up from the bottom. Incredible flavor but not for everyone. Like eating liver that tastes like a strong oyster.

I’m trying to figure this one out… I just can’t put liver and oysters together? So how do you describe a strong oyster? I’ve been forced to eat liver many many times as a youth, and I just can’t come close to comparing it to oysters.

Love uni. Not sure my description - tastes like a marsh smells - is any more appealing than that!
