my grandfather has been somewhat of an older boat collector for a little while but now realizes he’s 92 and never going to do anything with them lol.
he’s been getting me to help him pull the boats one by one out of the darn woods to cut up and haul off to the dump.
these boats are in BAD BAD shape. I mean bad. the starflite engine’s boat has a 10" diameter pine tree growing through the middle of the hull. no idea how it made it through the hull, but it did lol.
anyway, as payment for helping him clean them up, he’s going to give me these two engines.
the first one all I know about it is that it looks ancient. its got a control box of some sort mounted inside the transom and then goes to the throttle control up by the driver seat.
even my grandfather doesnt remember anything else about it. It may be seized, who knows. I figure there’s got to be at least some parts on it worth selling if it turns out to be junk?
the second looks like a smaller mid 80’s? evinrude? its got a nice aftermarket prop on it and I took the cowl off and it looks complete underneath but with the prop in the dirt and I cant reach the controls right now due to more tree growth…I couldnt get it to turn over by hand. it could be seized as well?
in physical size it looks about the size of a 40-50hp engine but no clue honestly.
I’m going to pull both setups off completely and see if I can get either of them freed up and then run some compression tests if that goes well and go from there.
what do you guys think?
he’s also got an old speed boat with a junked 350 IO setup running what looks like an alpha 1 drive. I happend to have two good running 350’s and this looks like it may make a good foundation to swap my dad’s old 4-banger IO setup in his old Mark I 19’ boat over to something fun as hell lol.
yep, they got me straightened out with my account after a few days. got this posted up over there as well. just trying to get some better coverage is all.
On that first one, there are folks who are real into restoring old Whalers. In the day, most had those old rudes on them.
There are two types of restorers; those that restore with newer stuff, and those that keep it old-skool, kinda like classic cars.
You might get some interest if you post that pic on WhalerCentral.com. Just a thought.
The first one is a V4 from the early to mid sixties. It could be either a 60 or 80hp. It should have a model/serial number tag on the transom bracket that will tell for sure. The control box on the inside of the transom was for the starter solenoid and battery wire junction. It was a pain and never really needed since there was so much room under that huge motor cover for that stuff anyway. It was eliminated in the later sixties and moved under the cover. One of those engines earned my dad’s opinion that they were gasoline cooled. I always though the name Starflite was a bit odd for a boat engine but it did sound cool. I don’t know how much value they have these days. The last one I had ended up at the metal scrap yard for a couple of bucks.
The second one is an early eighties three cylinder 60 or 70hp. Again the tag will tell you for sure. They were pretty decent engines.
