we did the one last year…(was brought in under usc/Clemson/costal) . what you wondering?
it was actually quite imformative… they had multiple stations setup with very knowledgeable people… they also had various maps and situational pictures describing/showing the view or what might be seen by the naked eye with the 3 different wind farm producers…
honestly it proably wont happen and hear is why…
1: its private… not funded by a big corporation
2: the rich people who would make the money off it don’t want it to obstruct their ocean view in their ocean front property’s mansions
3:the power staions to transfer power would need to be costal and close to the beach(land) not inland… the further inland obviously the price goes up…
the plus:
1: would create a good jobforce in maintance along with service boats…
2: because of said service boats smaller ports would be required to be maintained and dredged regularly
bad things:
the price…
the fact at this moment the government is not really backing the project so no tax breaks or incentives (think nuclear ect ect)
the footprint it requires is massive… you have to think LARGE scale… they are not talking 20 wind mills… think 1000’s
a few areas are behind it… actually north myrtle beach is the biggest backer of this… in the south… iirc an area in nc is as well but no where near as big as north myrtle…
iirc the area between Charleston and Georgetown in an airforce tranning area with basically a no build zone… the area between Georgetown and myrtle is basically controlled by debiedu and pawleys plantation(rich people) and are already fighting it and saying no to it… not just no but hell no… as they have traveled to many demo’s to fight them and all they are doing is showing what it is and all that…
I would feel the same rich yuppie in Charleston/south would fight it as well…
the areas’s I’m the north are much more for it… areas like Massachusetts and such.
they show most all the mapping over wha
Speaking of foot prints the rich seem to have much larger ones, think 1% having more wealth then 99%, Imagine paying a million dollars in taxes and then see if you don’t want to have a influence to where the money goes. In history great contributions and rebellions often come from the push of someone Powerful/rich. Now someone who is likely rich/powerful wants this and the other powerful/rich people say no. There is no proof or example of being sure that the benefits are greater than the damage butt seems good. Also the government has plenty of entities that are privately funded and operated that make great contributions (NASA) for certain processes it is easier to not to have to send it through the line for approval and funding when there are other issues that out weigh them. 1000"s offshore Windmills seems like a huge jump in point with a tremendous amount of financial investment, so you have to belief in the level of RD that went into this and the use of land windmills just furthers the feeling that this could potentially be huge and in mind will likely happen, we are in the green era, just not likely to happen any time soon probably 2020, 2024.
bing bango… if the rich don’t want to see windmills from their property in the ocean than they don’t buy the rights to the land…they don’t invest in green energy… the plantation I mentioned that is already fighting the idea has many wealthy people its quite exclusive… a few movie stars and nascar owners have places…
the footprint is quite large because it requires 1000’s to produce enough power to actually turn a profit and its larger than one would think because it cant be rows it has to be offset/staggered with miles between them… the last estimate I herd with 1000 wind mills of the larger size would take 14 years before a single dime became profit. don’t forget the water is not ownable so the property is leased or something on those lines. I didn’t really grasp the whole land/investment aspect as it really wasn’t the big topic
you also have to look at Europe and such that already has windmill farms… the fact most of them are actually not producing power but are not abandoned and are basically bird killing machines… this is something that was also touched on/asked was the mortality rate and how associations that favor birds may fight or what not…
I think the possibility is to far off to really think about…
but again I encourage anyone who can attend the worshop to attend as it really is layed out and presented well… the fact you are involved and not just thrown info at makes it fun.
