Looks like the fluke and striper bites are good. Heading up next week for the 4th. Hope to get some surf and possible fish a day or two. Any suggestions appreciated.
Better stay away from the biting strippers
You can fish the point at the lighthouse, but you have to be careful of the rocks. Are you fishing in the surf? if so then you need to be able to heave to get to the fish. I’m talking 150-200 feet. I usually use a 12 foot surf rod and diawa open face reel to get out to where the fishs are. Live eels fish on the bottom around the rocky points also produce nice stripers. Same rod different setup. Albies and Blues are also in the mix. You don’t need anything fancy for lures, usually a 2-4oz metal with a bucktail works fine. Big poppers for stripers/blues. Most of the tackle shops are pretty user friendly and I always go to Freddies bait and tackle.

I have fished quite a bit in that area of Montauk and Block Island. Like Mike says, live eels will produce especially at low light and at night. Cast them out in fishy areas like rips and around submerged boulders and work them back low and slow. Other good lures are white 2-3 oz bucktails with trailers, Hopkins no=eqls, and creek chub knucklehead poppers. I’m sure you will see other local surfcasters; they will often tip you off where the fish will be, but be courteous. Folks up there can get a little beligerent over people messin’ with thier mojo. Be careful around the rocks!

Oh, forgot to mention…you will have more luck targeting blues and stripers from the surf than fluke. Most of the big fluke are in 40-70 feet of water.
