I was there a few major hurricanes ago (10years ago), stayed in Matlacha…definitely a fishing village without much else (fine by me). The restaurant you referenced had great burgers and cold beer, we went there each of the 4 nights we were there…we pulled the boat (18’ cc) and explored on our own. Caught and released all the trout youd ever want to at the Indian Mounds on doa…there was a massive snook kill the year we went, no snook for us. The pass is something to see at least once and maybe just for a short time…I had the most fun sight casting to small schools(10-20) of tarpon off the beaches…sturdy rod with sensitive tip, lots of 30-40#braid, 60-80# leader, split shot, strong hook and live crab produced my first ever 100+# poon. Tried to get one on fly for a few days but never landed one, hooked a few. Pine island is right up there with my favorite places to fish…right up there with the everglades, the keys, and the wando in the 90s ; )
We stayed up on the north end of Bokeelia 5 years or so ago. We found huge schools of Cerro Mackerel in the harbor and spent several days pitching spoons into the schools. It was so much fun, and they grilled up nicely.
Did some fishing around the mangroves with minor success (fisherman’s fault I’m sure) where my oldest had his first and only Permit on the line. Got him within 10’ of the boat where the fish saw a derelict crab trap and headed straight for it where he promptly circled around it and broke the line. never seen my son so mad.
There was a really bad red tide that summer. We ventured out to the pass one day but passed so many floating dead fish we decided to move back inshore.
I have fished the pass there at Boca once. It was insane and we were not ready for that level of lunacy. It is a really beautiful area though. I’d love to go back.
