I think its a bad idea… not only is it not practical, but its harmful to the fish… Even if you were able to cast a fly, and drive a hook home with the 3 wt, you would have to fight the fish for entirely to long before landing him… this stresses the fish out and cuts the survival chances after the release in half… its just not responsible fishing… just because you could do something doesn’t mean you should.

I’ve caught a few on 4/5 wt and it is a blast, but that is about as small as I would go.
Please tell me you are joking. As mike pointed out, it would be really irresponsible to do so. If you want a challange, why not try a lighter tippet? That way if you are not landing the fish fast enough and are stressing it out you can always break him off.

Yep. You should NOT hit the reds with less than a 6 wt. You certainly can do it - but you might as well keep the fish, as something bigger in the food chain will make an easy meal out of it after you have worn him out.

not to mention that a 3wt likely doesn’t have saltwater friendly components…
what about some peanuts on the 3wt, will likely be killing any peanuts i catch so fight length wont matter, tunny too?

Better stock up on 3wt reels.

Just because you can do something doesn’t necessarily make it a good idea! You could always try a little spear fishing or how about breaking out the ole long bow and wacking a few toads, what the heck, you coluld even take it a step further and try the ole jigger pole and some thread or even go one step further and try a little hand to hand combat like they did back in the good ole days… the bottom line is that however you take a fish, you need to show a little respect for the fish and even more respect for the fishery. Why don’t you try to set the bar just a wee bit higher than your peers, if you want to ego trip and brag about how your rods longer and stronger than the rest, you need to visit your local pub not the local flat!
was not wanting to do any of it to brag, just think it would be fun, i fish for fun not to brag, and only ever catch a few

It might be fun to jump off the cooper river bridge too but should you do it?
