Anyone fly fishing for trout

New to fishing around Charleston. Was wondering if anyone fly fishes for trout?

What are some “go to” flies for trout?

Can you fly fish during the winter months?

Sorry for all of the questions but I have no clue about fishing during November, December, January and February.

I have been fishing out of Buck Hall.

Thanks for any help.

Whenever I have a gurgler tied on the end of my leader I seem to get a trout or two. Usually when I’m walking flats as the sun goes down you will see them hitting bait and you throw the gurgler in there and they usually take it. As it gets colder start throwing baitfish patterns, something bright usually. Also gurglers are still great early morning and as the Suns setting.

Yes! A fly rod is a great way to target trout, especially in the cold water.
Cold water usually means available bait are glass minnows. A brown/white clouser with very small lead eyes or bead chain is a great offering. Cast up current and let it present over structure naturally, give very small strips to give it life. “Elephants eat peanuts”

others I use? clouser, bendbacks, topwater, kinky muddler and others.

Optiker has is right when the mullet are gone, go with glass minnow.
got a switch rod just for swinging oyster rips!

I think it was January, bundled up and it was cold…

Go get um and have a blast. Man when there ganged up it can be every cast.

OK GREAT. Thanks for the help. I will let you all know how I do.

Good info ,yesssir…A lot of fun when they get on the glass minnows. An olive clouser/silver flash, albie whore or any pattern that looks somewhat like a glass minow will catch ridiculous numbers at that time.I like to go down to a 4wt and will probably give it a go with my 2wt brookie rod this year. Of course last time I threw my 4# a 27" spottail smashed my shrimp fly…now THAT was sporty! have fun and tight loops~
