What tactics are you planning on using? I’m looking for schools, but will have planner boards out (2 per side) and a free line in the rear. thinking about leaving the downrigger in the garage, kind of expecting more top action.
Has anyone been fishing?
Did see my first sea gull of the year on Hartwell today. I wish I could go Sat but it is the peak of the rut. I figure if we get a couple of weeks of this weather then the planer boards will be hot:smiley:
Come on down for this Saturday afternoon. The process is the same. You just let out the far one (usually a free line for me) first and let it go way out to where you want it. then put the other line out using what ever depth you want, just like a down line from the boat and let it out. Truth is with an experienced crew, 3 is pretty easy per side, then one free out the back (or on a balloon or a bobber). Got to be a million ways to do it. I might evern get carried away and use some split shoot up the line to drag them down instead of the normal carolina rig that I usually go with.
I’ll keep you posted. Hope to bring one the neighboorhood kids with me (he hasn’t caught anything yet… but has lost more fish than we have put in the boat! I am going to watch how he holds his tongue this time and for sure go with circle hooks)
Catch um up tight lines and screaming drags are waiting
Bob, I will also run 2 out of each side and 1 out the back on a balloon(I run this one way back). I will also use a at least 1 down rod up near the front of the boat to see if they are deep. When you get this many lines out alone it can get to be almost like work when you hit a good spot.
I always keep a few extra rods rigged so when I hang up and I am on the fish I can break it off and keep put another rod out and re-rig later when it calms down.
Bob we gonna have to get some driftmasters all over the Whaler:smiley:
Seriously I do use my to rod mounts that are on the gunnels for my planer boards and then I will put my balloon rig up in the rocket launcher for the way back line. This way if you need to fight a fish to the rear of the boat from one of the others that line will not get in your way.
I have even thought, and I think we have discussed it on here as well, about breaking out the outriggers and see how that works out.
Ya’ll have a good time this weekend, currently I am sitting on the couch battling flu like illness(basically I feel Like SH$T). I did not even hunt this am and am not making the trip for Westsides ballgame at Aiken(I do the radio broadcasts on the away games) and this is killing me.
I fish Murray often and usually use a redi-rig instead of a balloon, but tell me please–How do you attach the balloon to the line w/o tying a knot in the line? If you do tie a knot, does this not decrease the breaking point of the line at the knot?
I have made some clips, similar to what I use on a planner board. If this doesn’t make sense, drop an email with an address and I will mail you one.
Materials: alligator clip, heat shrink tubing, small key ring(circle ring - but cheap and light weight) (like the ones you put an extra key up with a lablel on) and a snap swivel (they now have double snap swivels that will work
Take the standard alligator clip that you would use for an electrical connector. Heat shrink tubing over both sides of teeth. This is where you will put the line through. remove the screw (made for the wire) and put the circle ring through the hole. This is what you will tie the balloon to. Attach the swivel to the circle ring. And you are done.
To use: Blow up the balloon, and tie it to the circle ring. Attach the snap swivel over the line (it will slide down to the fish when caught just like a planer board)and connect the whole thing to the line with the alligator clip. When a fish hits, the alligator clip will release.
If you have a lot of money, skip the alligator clip, just get a light weight offshore clip ($9 for two) and do the same. nicer looking, works great.
Some guys will just use a clip, and the circle ring, but when a fish hits, it all releases and floats away. Trashing the area and harming the environment that we enjoy.
Hope this helps and is clear at least as clear as mud. I will be using some on Saturday at Clarks hill
