Should be doable but isn’t a Sea Ray a bay boat? You may get you butts kicked in the NE wind that is forecast. If it is a single engine boat then you may want to arrange to have a buddy boat this time of year.
Will be interesting to see how the forecast pans out by tomorrow night… Based on the forecast today, It looks like your weather window could evaporate very quickly and get caught in some tough\cold conditions. Seems a bit early to call from my perspective.
Thanks guys, that’s the kind of great advice I was looking for.
You’re all pretty much confirming what I was thinking which is anything with a N or NE wind is not good…
His boat is a Sea Ray cabin cruiser, not ideal for fishing but a little bigger than mine and he feels comfortable on it.
I’m a neophyte at this stuff compared to most, but I do fish the reefs in a small boat and FWIW, I wouldn’t even think about a trip in that short of a window as it stands now. With that N/NE wind, they only have to be off slightly on the wind velocity and you wind up with some really sloppy conditions…even close in.
IMO, especially since this is your first trip, I would plan around when we have a couple of days in a row of light winds and calm seas forecasted instead of trying to make it out during a “window”.
As with any fishing trip this time of year, you have the added concern of: if you had a big problem and had to ditch the boat, you won’t survive very long in the cold water - so good on you for thinking this through carefully. There is likely to be others at the Chs 60 so as long as there are others around I wouldn’t worry too much, but the N/NE wind/waves is a concern.
you might consider running to capers reef, fish and then have the wind at your stern coming back to the jetties instead of broadside seas you would have from coming back from the 60. There are many times that you get to the end of the jetties and just turn around if it’s too rough.
I bailed on the reef trip but my buddy, his dad and sis-in-law still went. The plan was to head out the jetties, check the conditions and either head to the 60 or nearshore. If it was really nasty, try the grillage/dynamite hole. I haven’t spoke to him to hear about the trip but the NE increasing wind didn’t sound fun to me.
I’ll post on the outcome after I speak with him.
