I sure didn’t(well not much anyway) we caught a few fish in the bomb island area. The thing is there were fish under the boat most of the time but they would not bite(or I could not get them to bite anyway). The ones we caught were over 21. We were only out Sunday morning and we only stayed out for a couple hours. Just wondering if anyone else had the same results or was it just me. Water depth was 53 feet.

FISH: An animal that grows the fastest between the time it’s caught and the time you tell your friends about it!
We limited out sat morning in that area most of them were keepers 20 of the 25 were we were done by 815 am some just pecked the bait I would slow reel and the bite would be on with a decent fish
Slow pickings on Saturday out in front of Jake’s … Definitely like the evening bite better …
Only picked up 4 fish (18", 20", 21", 22") for the MSC Kids TX all morning …
I guess I should have sent Danny a text, but I forgot to load his number into my phone …
Fishing around Jake’s and in the big pond was good all last week until Friday … Then things flipped and the reports mid-lake on Saturday were better … I haven’t heard much from yesterday, but we’re still too new at this to be able to pattern the fish with any consistency …
Side Note - I know you like to cut bait - all the under 10 winners on Saturday were cut baiting … I know the 2 & 3 place winners were in the big pond … Wish I knew where the 1st place winner was because he brought in a 13# Striper as his first fish of the day … kinda hard to top that …
I caught some this weekend, but overall pretty slow considering the amount of time I spent on the lake.
I took Fri off. Went out about 1PM for a rare mid day trip armed with the bimini, a can of sunscreen and some cold drinks. Hate to make the towers a destination spot, but to be honest, it’s the only place I seem to be able to catch any fish at mid day in the summer.
Nothing for a couple of hours, then picked up 3 in a span of about 15 minutes. 2 were about 21" and the last one was a nice 29" fish that was a freak catch. I was stopping after 2 fish to head over to Liberty for a late lunch and was just idling in neutral, drifting along while I reeled in my lines. There was a good breeze blowing and I was probably drifting about 1MPH and the line was lifted way up. I doubt it was down 20’ when that fish hit.
Later on after eating I stopped on a hump in 65’ marked a bunch of fish and picked up the last 2 right away.
Sat eve I went to that same hump and got set up and anchored with the light out. Drew bait pretty quick and got a few dozen on the first cast. Unfortunately, was only marking an occasional fish or 2 and no takers. My son, up with some friends from Chas, came over and tied up and we sat there till about 1am without a hit. We left to drop someone off when they decided they wanted to try the towers. It was about 2 am and we tied up together again and had a great time with everyone catching some fish. Pretty much all of them just 20-22" or so. Got off the lake about 4:30.
Sorry for the long post with such a high ratio of words/fish caught, but I decided to have lunch at my desk today and needed something to do.
At least all that time on the water this weekend got it out of my system for a while. I’m probably good for 2 or 3 days now.
I put in at the dam around 6:30 this morning. As I was backing down the ramp I saw David (bait man) working a school of stripers straight out from the dock. As expected, by the time I parked the truck and got on the water they were gone… Then the rain started… I fished a few nearby humps and marked scattered fish but no bites… Then the rain became steadier… I shot over to the towers and one guy I spoke to said bite was pretty steady for an hour or so just before sunrise but it had since shut down. I motored out into the big pool to check out some more humps…Then it started pouring… By this time I was already soaked down to my underwear so it didn’t really matter… Then the lightning started… I hauled it over to the ramp and hung out with 12 other fishermen for an hour or so under the picnic shelter. They all had reports similar to mine which made me feel a little better. After the storm passed I puttered around yacht cove for a bit to no avail and called it quits.
On a side note. One of the guys in the shelter was a bass pro from Texas who was pre-fishing for the FLW cup. It always seems odd when I meet someone who’s traveled hundreds of miles to fish a lake that’s practically in my back yard.

That FLW tournament is August 14-17 out of Dreher. $500,000 for first place. Not bad money for a few days of fishing.
It’s interesting how bass fishing ended up in one of our threads. While on vacation in Surfside last week, we had some fun catching largies on topwaters-- devil horse and jitterbugs-- in the ponds in Oceanside Village a couple of evenings. I had forgotten how much fun that can be with the violent strikes and aerial displays put on by 2-3 pounders. It’s great to do something different occasionally.
Heading out for some Clarks Hill stripers on Wednesday. Will post how we do.
Last year … Big Fish paid out over $1.4 MILLION!!!
In two weeks, over $1.2M (so far) goes to Big Fish … Only $1,250 per boat for as many anglers as you can get on your boat …
TX starts in two weeks and you can fish up to three out of the five days …
Anyone have any vacation time left?
The $1250 is the jumping off point. In order to win the million dollar money you need to enter the Added Entry Skill Levels or “Calcuttas”. If you enter all of them you’re probably looking at about 10 grand. Which is still a pretty good return on investment. www.whitemarlinopen.com/info/calcuttas/
Back in the 2007 White Marlin Open, an aquaintance of mine, Billy Matthews, weighed in a 590 lb Blue Marlin with a prize of $378,000 but was DQ’d because of inconsistencies with his polygraph test. After a year long court battle the judge upheld the DQ not because of the polygraph but because of an error on his entry form. It’s amazing how ugly the otherwise enjoyable sport of fishing can be when huge money is involved. http://mdcoastdispatch.com/2008/07/17/white-marlin-open-controversy-settled/
Nothing much more beautiful in the water than a 20#+ fish slowly coming up to the boat frim the depths hooked to your line. Those big fish just have a different look to them when they make their first apperence.

While fishing a largie tournament, we saw a bunch of striper boats about a mile out from the mouth of Beards creek Saturday morning. Wondered if, and hoped that, they were doing better than we were. The largemouth bite was pretty much done by 8:30. We did get lucky and won the tournament. Saw only a few schooling fish that wouldn’t stay up long at all. Caught all of the bass on soft plastics.
