Yep it sucks, but no pain / no gain = no fish.
C P you might want to see an allergist or a dermatolgist[sp].
My wife is allergic to the stuff that’s in the shrimp heads, she started getting alleregy shots and now she can handle the shrimp with no problem, hell she alleregic to almost everything and the shots help her alot.
Double D.
I second the allergist. Sounds like you have a good contact allergy. There might be something you can take to help this, but I doubt it will be over the counter. Dr. Ball is good in Mt. P.
Sounds like you’re getting some good advice; all I add is a warning about marine-borne infections common to fisherman, crabbers and shrimp pickers. It’s serious stuff. If you see a small lump under your skin anywhere you need to get a doc to check it out. I had surgery to get one off my forearm and then had to take a load of antibiotics for 6 weeks.
Had to go to an “infectious disease” specialist. Was I nervous? I would not sit down in her waiting room, never touched a magazine or anything and about peed my myself instead of using their bathroom; blood pressure went up, too.
Keep some hydrgen peroxide on your boat and soak any scratch or cut, particularly if you nick yourself with a used hook.
There’s some strange stuff out there; ask the dolphins.

Hey Cane Pole,
Just wondering if you have found a solution to this problem. I have the same problem and want to find out what makes them do this.
Thanks

what about prep. h with cortisone or the generic. maybe apply prior to going and afterwards. oral steroids have too much risk i think. it sure does sound allergic.

Bassmaster: I have tried everything and I mean everything.
From lotions, surgical gloves and then dive gloves on after the surgical gloves, nothing has worked, and even bringing big bottles of rubbing alcohol, and peroxide. Good thing no infections.
Problem is when bottom fishing I am constantly baiting, and taking fish off. Last time I went bottom fishing a few weeks back, I tried to handle as little as possible and use the de-hooker, still didn’t help. So I figured touching 1 or a hundred, what’s the use. Trolling even the ballyhoo does this to my hands as well, cause they peel soon afterwards.
When I saw the Doc, he was like you definetly have an allergic reaction, you are the 1st for me, told me to try some cream from the drugstore, and I was like man I have tried all that. Plus it’s a mess and washes off. I just figured from working on head boats from 12 to 19 years of age, it’s now caught up with me over the years, body doesn’t fight it as well.
I have no answer or cure, when I googled there was some discussions that I found where others were having the same problems as well.

Most usually it is a person’s intolerance to iodine. Some people may be allergic to one species slime and not others also but mostly it is the iodine factor that causes the most problem.
Unfortunately iodine intolerance can be a building problem for some people and over time they can get severely reactive to it. I had a cousin who was a head seafood chef aboard the Fairstar for several years. He grew up catching filleting and eating seafood with no problems. After 5 years aboard the Fairstar he developed an ellergic intolerance to iodine and gave up working as a chef. He would blow up from simply touching seafood of any kind and take days to come right. He ate an appetizer at a party about 8 yrs ago and blew up as it contained tuna in it. He died before they could get the ambulance to him.
Take care with any form of seafood allergy as it is often no where near as bad as it can develop into.
makes a bit of sense to me

Thanks,Jan.
i was thinking last night if it were iodine one could get some betadine or some sort of iodine in the drug store and “paint a little bit on” and see if one would react to that. also i remember reading some years ago about some small organisms in the ocean that could cause the same thing too but i cant remember where or if that idea was correct. unfortunately i think other people have your problem as well. maybe some sorta doc who is well acquainted with salt water problems could really help

I sometimes get a mild case of this, usually when I clean fish, or use chunked bait that was caught fresh. Slight swelling, skin drys and a few days later I’ll peel, usually just the fingers from the knuckles to the fingertips (usually where direct contact was). can be a slight burning/itch sensation after cleaning fish. noticed it most cleaning striped bass,& red drum.
I usually don’t catch enough to worry about it! lol.
If you find out more keep posting.
