Looking to take a mid June trip with Bro in law/Sis in law to Clearwater FL this June and will take my boat
They went last year and I hooked them up with a great guide through THT and their teen boys had a blast with the tarpon
What other type of fishing should I expect down there, do a lot of trolling for kings out of Charleston and have also taken boat to PCB FL and wore kings out there
I know the tarpon will be our fish of choice but just curious to what else to fish for down there
Great time of year to be there! Should be plenty of Kings and Spanish a the nearshore reefs. Big Cobia aren’t unusual either. Skyway is the Tarpon spot. Can catch some nice Mangrove snapper there too and bait is super easy to get under the bridge. Less boat traffic and lots of good inshore fishing around St. Joseph sound.
Also if you were interested in a consult trip checkout flwadefisherman.com on facebook. Jon does mostly inshore but knows the Skyway veery well. Super cool extremely knowledgeable guy and can’t beat his prices!
Great flat fishing. Its one of the places i miss sight fishing for reds on the flats. Tarpon fishing at the deeper areas is fun also. I never got to try offshore but i know you dont have to go far out to have a good time pulling up fins. Also, if you get a chance, if its that time of year take a drive down to Boca which isnt far and experience the running of the tarpon down the coast. Its definately an experience.
I was born in the Clearwater Hospital so I know a little bit
No but for real I would go with what the previous posters said. LOTS of great inshore action, especially after they banned the netting 15 years ago. We always concentrated on the flats and mangroves and caught tons of trout and reds. Also, pompano are thick in the bay channels during the summer. If this was a few years ago I would hook you up with my Dad’s best friend Captain Paul Hawkins for some inshore fly fishing (monster tarpon), but he recently retired. I can try to find his contact info later if you want to try to pick his brain a little bit…
