I got a 14’ super V and put a 15 hp evinrude on it. Cant get it to really plane out. Occasionally it will, but must of the time it just plows slowly. I had the carb cleaned. Starts and idles really well. I would think the 15HP would be enough to at least get it up on plane with 1 person in it. Is something wrong with the motor/setup or do you think i need more HP. Maybe the prop is wrong? was wondering if anyone else is running the same setup? Not looking for anything fast, just use it to flounder fish cherry grove and pawleys, but it woudl be nice to at least plane out. I am thinking it something with the motor or prop as every now and then it will plane out
Try putting a little weight in the bow, that should help keep it from plowing and maybe get you on a plane
I would think not enough motor for the most part. I would think of looking at a 25 - 30 hp. I have a 25 on mine and it does just dandy.
I see alot of them with 40’s. 15 just ain’t enough.

Try getting a running start into the current if the tides moving. I’ve overloaded boats before and that worked.
But yeah, youre missing about 10hp there.

Don’t ask me how I know.
15 hp should perform better than you describe.
A friend of mine had a 14’ with a 15 that he was passing off as a 9.8 so he could use it in some restricted reservoirs. The 15 would do pretty good with both of us in the boat. No speed demon, but no trouble putting the boat on plane.

I can’t say anything with certainty, but you do seem to be underpowered. If you had something flat-bottomed or close to it, like the 13.5’ Whalers, you’d stand a far better chance at planing, but a deep-V isn’t going to plane out nearly as easily.
If you can’t upgrade to a bigger motor, try putting one of the hydrofoil stabilizers on your motor. I put one on my 14’ Starcraft aluminum semi-v with a 6hp, and it would “faux-plane”. It raised the transom’s riding height incredibly, and made the ride far more pleasurable. Made steering far more responsive as well, but it didn’t roll very hard to the side on sharp turns.

I have a 16’ high tide with a 60 evenrude. With just me it runs like a scalded dog. I think 15 might be on the light side too.
Have you checked your plugs?

thanks for the replies. I know it wont be fast and isnt Ideal but i feel it should so better than what it is doing. I dont need much to fish the small creeks where i use this boat. The fact that it has planed out a few times leads to me think maybe something isnt right with the motor. Of course it could have been just the right combination of current and wind when it has planed out in the past. didnt really pay attention. I might try adding one of those whale tales and see if it helps. The 15 hp is perfect for slow trolling/ bumping in and out of gear for flounder. Have a feeling more HP will ruin that
Check your plugs; if they are fouled up, it won’t run efficiently. If you haven’t changed them in a while, its time to do it anyways.
About a month ago, mine bogged down and wouldn’t plane. Pulled the plugs and sure enough, one of them was fouled. Replaced them and ran like a champ after that.

its got brand new plugs in it. clean fuel and filter. I guess part of the issue is I just put this motor on the boat at the end of last year and its been like this from the beginning, so i dont really know if it should perform better or not
A hydrofoil will help some, put as much weight forward , coolers etc. as possible. What will make the most difference though is a tiller extender. I think they are 30.00 and up depending on whether it`s a fixed or telescopic. This allows you to sit more to the center of the boat and will fix your problem planning.
you need more power to plane-
bumped up to 40 from 25 on my 15’ skiff for the same reason. It would do ok, 15-17 WOT w just me- no gear. gear and fishing buddy - should have been in a soybean field because all we could do was plow.
If you ain’t retie’n, you aint try’n…
I had to put a whales tail on mine. But i think it was water logged. But the tail helped out 100% >

I doubt that going to a larger motor would hurt your ability to troll. If it does, you can simply mount a Happy Troller trolling plate. We’ve used them for many years and not only do they slow you effectively, but when extended they work like a hydrofoil to lif the bow and put you on plane faster.

I am guessing most of the older hi tides are waterlogged. How do you tell? floor is solid, on the one I got. mine is a 1987
Some obvious signs are soft spots on floor, cracks and other signs of delamination. If you know the weight of a dry boat (of the same model) you have something to compare to as well. If you had a larger motor and it is still sluggish, then that could be a sign also.
Unsealed or improperly sealed screw holes are a big contributor to water intrusion. My boat was full of them…but hidden by a paint job.
