Anyone take their fishing kayaks off/near shore?

How far out do you go and what kind of fish do you target? I’m very interested in trying this at some point.

thanks,
Ian

I paddle my kayak out to the 226 on the regular. Burn up the dolphin this time of year…

those guys were just trying to go to the lighthouse, but yes, it turned tragic quickly…

Looked up the 226 hole. Yep, you’re trolling for sure. LOL

Don’t risk your life trying to go offshore of charleston in a kayak.

I see some wrecks on navionics about 5 miles out. That’s more along the lines of what I was thinking, but maybe Charleston isn’t the place to do that. I’m going to a low country angler’s event in Charleston this weekend if the weather cooperates. I’ll ask some local kayakers about it.

5 miles is a loooooooooong way in a kayak, and in my opinion could be considered reckless. I personally would never do that regardless of what safety equipment i have with me. Plb, vhf, flares, blah blah blah. You would have to be a champion paddler to assure you could make it back. I mean crikey, going through an inlet is tough enough, let alone offshore. If the wind changes, go ahead and make sure you have your out of state NC fishing license because thats where youll end up.

Why not try a few hundred yards off a beach on a calm day before putting a horizon between you and charleston?

^^ Exactly

Stress release,is that you?

I wouldn’t take a kayak to the south jettie from Morris island… I would highly suggest finding a buddy boat.

Good luck!

Steven

Oh, I wouldn’t be paddling. That 2.5 suzuki in my sig will push me about 8-10mph.

The consensus is definitely against me though, so more research is in order.

Thanks

Way too much traffic around the harbor for a kayak. You’ll get run over or flipped over.

How about a mother ship operation on a reeeeel calm day. Load the kayaks on a boat, go out deeper and do some bottom/reef fishing.

I’ve seen this done. Last year saw a kayak on weed line pitching at dolphin. That is awesome lol

Go for it,its been slow around here for awhile.

Mother shipping out would be the only way I would do that. Reeling in a dolphin or a wahoo would be a rush in a kayak but I’d never paddle out here. The Keys maybe.

For a point of reference, the guy that got swept out to sea (buddy died) was only 2 miles out. And that was AFTER he got swept out to sea. As Bonzo mentioned, their original plan was just to go to the lighthouse.

That's probably a solid plan as long as someone in good health stays on the mothership.

As a general rule, when I am diving, I like to have TWO guys on the boat at a minimum. If one guy falls out, has a heart attack, stroke, whatever, there is a backup. 2 is 1 and 1 is none…
