I know there’s some big horse mullet around, but anyone catching any finger mullet size in the net?
Here’s a question I’m pondering…Are the 4-6 inch finger mullet that we’ll be catching later in the summer, wintering offshore or are they born in creeks in the early spring and then growing to that size by summer?
I tried asking one of the really big mullet about this but he didn’t seem to understand English.
large finger size in little feeder creeks, mostly 5-8" though. the smaller of them have been getting whacked happily by the trout and an occasional flounder… just have to let them take a minute to eat.
the aforementioned were born some time last year, and the ones that will be the “candy mullet” (as stretcharmstrong likes to call them) next month and then finger mullet this summer were born late last year or early this year. adults migrate offshore in nov/dec, and spawn till maybe February- the young then migrated in and became “tinsel mullet” (as I’ve heard them called when <1") that can still swim right through a 3/8" cast net.
seen a bunch of tinsel mullet up the Wando a few weeks ago. 12+ inch mullet this week. Plenty of mud minnows in the trap, but have not thrown a cast net yet.
All fish have come on artificials for me this spring anyway. Mostly on the 5 inch Berkeley Powerbait Jerkshad mullet color. I guess finger mullet would slay them right now. Flounder, trout and stripers on that bait.
