from the inside out? Of course, you would have to start from the bottom. Maybe you could just show these guys how to catch snapper, grouper, and bsb…
The last 2 years we have come into Watchapreauge Va. The same woman from NOAA has quizzed us with a survey. I do not go to the docks here just the ramps when I’m invited ; ) Curious as to if off shore charter captains here get a live survey at the docks by a consistant representative. That would be a great summer job ; )
Pure recreational data here is virtually non-existent. I’ve never been asked anything by anyone by any means- except for HMS reporting. The only GOOD data the fisheries service has from the fishery itself is commercial data starting in the mid-late eighties. The only fishery independent data (govt research) is severely underfunded, or, my favorite, when it shows something grossly different than what the high up bureaucrats want it to show they simply throw it out.
At the state level, as an example, I get asked on an annual basis when, where and how much shrimp I catch during recreational baiting season, and I think I report something highly accurate each year. Imagine what’d happen if the state was in charge of managing marine species. I know one thing, we wouldn’t have corrupt financial and political interests running the system instead of people dedicated to serving the people and resources of this state…

Phin thanks for the reply and all your hard work. I asked the lady where all the data was compiled and said that I would like to see it. She said you might look on the web site. I know she has done this in the summer for at least 2 years now up there. Twould be interesting. Bottom line: I dont get to go often but recently have watched some nice fish have to be put back. I would just like to know that closures limits etc are based on real data. And that my children will be able to fish!
